Complicated future ahead for second hand PHEV’s?
As a self employed driver of a contract hire 330E M Sport I was thinking there may be complications ahead for the second hand market and residual forecasting for PHEV’s.
Up to now a cars age,cosmetic condition, mileage, desirability and reliability have been the factors determining second hand pricing. With increasing numbers of PHEV’s coming to market is this a potential minefield for forecasting second hand values? Will a 330E with 50,000 miles after three years be more valuable if those miles have been covered mainly by the ICE or by the electric cell? Is the ware and tear on the ICE more expensive than a car used primarily for a 30 mile round trip using electric exclusively? I guess as my car is contract hired over three years I don’t have to be concerned this time. Maybe next time I’ll have to provide a breakdown of how many of my 22k miles per year will be ICE and how many electric...or maybe I’ve too much time on my hands to think about such things atm? |

Yup. Luckily the finance bids can jus taper it out. You'd cover yourself I assume if you take out a PCP. You can just hand it back if values have bottomed.
My dealer told me the reason BMW stopes the range extended version of the i3 was due to so many issues with engines seizing due to not being used. Granted a 330e is very different. Really though PHEVs are the mainstream future until EVs have better charging infrastructure.

It all seems to be hinging on battery technology. The holy grail would seem to be a balance of rapid charging, storage capacity, longevity and weight.
I believe Samsung are leaders in this search. Even more important than the fabled quest for white LED’s earlier this century. |
