E90 Angel Eyes as daytime running lights (without turning on parking lights

Ok so I decided to make another DIY about this. Mpowerman has a very good one here http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=55190 also, but I am a bit slow lol so I wanted to make one with more pictures describing the things that took me a little bit to figure out correctly when I did this.

For difficultly out of 10 I rate this a 4-5 its not to hard, but for pain in the a$$ level I rate it a 10 because there are so many little things you have to do.

Here it goes. DO THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK I AM NOT RESPONSIBLE IF YOU BLOW SOMETHING UP !!

Equipment needed:

Jack, Jack Stands.
17,8,7mm sockets
I used 18gauge wire bought 100feet
Some wire taps and connectors, 5 amp fuse and fuse holder
Two resistors (i used 20w 8ohm and it seemed to work)
Wire strippers, screw drivers, needle nose pliers

First you need to take off the two side covers and the center cover just to get to the ECU over, its a BIG pain just to get the over off. There are 6 bolts to get the air filter off, then 2 move underneath to remove the center piece. The pic below shows what it looks like with the covers removed.

The pic below where its highlighted is where the ECU is located under that white cover.

Once you open the ECU cover you look for the Red wire with a white line through it, its a basic accessory wire that goes on once the car is in position 2 or started. It also stays on for a few seconds after the car is off (your Angel eyes will stay on too for a few seconds).

Next I ran some wires to both sides of the car. You need a power wire to each side of the car. I used the existing tubing on both sides to snake a wire out to look more OEM

Ok so now you have the wires through. You use one of your wire taps to tap on that red wire with the white line. then you connect both power wires to the other end of the fuse holder. Leave the fuse out till your all connected up and grounded.

Here are a few more pics of how I hid the wires.

Now your ready for next step. You have to jack both sides of the car up (jackstands please!) and take off the tire. You will see the inner liner which you will remove also.

One you remove the liner you will see the headlight and the cover for the Angel eye light bulb. I highlighted the cover. You need to pop that off its a little bit of a pain you need a screwdriver at the top and the bottom to get the clips to pop.

Once that is popped you will see the two wires that are connected to the bulb currently.

Just to show you what a resistor does I included this picture. I connected the resistor between the two wires that I detached from the bulb, turned the car on and it ran fine with no bulb out indicator.

Next I ran the ground. There is a metal rod thats welded to the bumper that is where the horn is attached. I just loosened the horn put a connector on the end of the wire and put it under the bolt, then tightened the horn bolt back up. I tested the ground with a multimeter and got a good reading. The good news is there is a horn on each side so you can do the same on both, (at least I think its the horn lol).

You can also see in this pic that I ran the ground and the power wire through a hole I drilled on the side of the bulb cover. I reused the OEM connectors, I cut them off since I am going to connect the OEM wires to the resistors. I also ran to wires through for the resistor that I will connect later.

Next I connected the existing brown and green to the Resistor (had to lengthen the wires). I put the resistor far away up against metal bumper. These resistors get really hot, so you dont want it laying on or touching any plastic or wires.

Now your almost done, just plug the new wires you ran for the ground and the power to the bulb, connect the fuse and test it out.

Before I taped everything up and put it all away I tested the lights, I tried it both on acc and also with the car running for a bit, both worked fine.

The next pic is what it looks like with the wires all cleaned up and taped. If I had to do it again I would use black instead of red just easier to hide. You may notice this the whole DIY was on the drivers side and this last pic was on the passenger side. I took a break before starting the passenger side when I came back I put the liner on and the tire on the drivers side without taking that final pic, so here it is just on the passenger side.

Final picture! It works !!

Nice DIY. I did the same as Mpowerman a long time ago.
I kept the OEM bulbs as I did not want to use resistors.
It is not mentioned here, but anyone making holes on the AE cover needs to
seal it back. My headlights started to fog on rainy days.
Just recently, I applied silicon sealer to one headlight and left the other one
with just electrical tape.
Well, the next rainy day, the silicon sealed headlight did not get fogged up.
So, seal it. just my 2 cents

I didnt upgrade my lights at all. So the OEM bulbs are still lighting the rings. I had to use resistors or the car would get a bulb out warning because the original wires are no longer powering the bulbs.

Yes I used sealant to I forgot to mention that.

Here are a few more, one with the engine back together (all wires hidden) and one with the AE's on in the day.

Great DIY.

Just did mine yesterday.

No need to remove airbox and used black wires (hides very well).

Hardest part was jacking up car and removing covers.

Thanks

The only thing I see wrong with this is that drilling into the angel eye bulb cover will allow moisture in and fog the headlight.

you coud do it with only one wire directly to pin 1 of the headlight

the pin 1 its for angel eyes.
you dont need to drill a hole
but you need to take care of the wire that it is factory connected to pin 1

best regards

FYI, this can be done with Coding in 10 minutes with no modification.

Coding does not work on the 06 E90.

As for the other comment about fogging, I siliconed the hole after I ran the bulbs, I have been running this setup for almost 3 years now and have never had any fog in the lenses.

Hey I had a question I wanted to have my coronas as drl also. I did the fog light delete on my m3 rep number and added the m3 ducts. I was thinking of powering the corona lights with the fog light power and adding diodes to only allow power in one direction. Then I can turn off/on the Coronas during the day by the fog light switch for dealer visits. What do you guys think

That has to be the dumbest thing you have said on this forum. Ive got a 06 model and can code just about everything on it. and have coded several other 05-06 cars with different combinations of DRLs, xenons, adaptive xenon etc

For being on here since 2014 you'd think you would have learned to check how old a post is before being dickhead.

Please, code DRL angel eyes on an FRM1. I would truly be impressed if you could.
