N57 Trouble Starting
Hi everyone,
Ill start by saying I have a 15 X5 35D with 63K miles and I figured I would post here as there is not much information regarding diesels on the X5 side of the forums. I have been having intermitten trouble starting the car or rough start up. Its very random when it happens as in its not every cold start and once it starts the first time it has no trouble starting after that through out the day. It will crank and rev to 500 rpm, pause for less than a second and then go to the full 1000 or so where it idles rough for abour 2-3 seconds. After that it runs without any issues at all, no rough idle or anything like that. This is happening in 40-50F weather. I changed the fuel filter out about 10k miles ago at 53K miles. The car now has about 63K miles on it. I have been filling up at the same BP diesel gas station for the past 5 years or so of ownership as well as my parents who also have a diesel 3 series without any issues. There is no CEL or any codes that come up when scanning the car. I wanted to reach out to see if anyone had any suggestions on what it could possibly be? |

At the moment, i do not have any means of checking for the fuel pressure on the low side. Is this done with Ista?

Run a decent additive through it every fill up and see if the problem goes away. I use opti-lube winter blend and the xpd in the summer

It's probably best to get a $35 OBD USB cable and download Test-o. Then chart fuel pressure before HPFP, rail pressure, injection quantity during start to see where the gremlins are.

Welp, I hate to say it but this past Saturday the car would not start at all. Scanned for codes and got nothing but " Microphone; open circuit". Decided to have it towed to BMW 4 miles away. The diagnosis was a blown engine. They said the timing chain skipped and the engine started knocking when they got the car started.
Really do not know where to go from here being the car is out of warranty but awaiting a final decision from the service department regarding the car. |
