That Time of the Year Again!

Not having owned a BMW for 10 years, i now have the new 330i G20 M Sport.
My question is, what is the best set up to drive in icy conditions?
My last BMW 320d was a nightmare in icy conditions, and couldnt go up a hill on ice without wheel spin.

Garage List
Dedicated snow tires are the best, Such as Blizzak tires . If you are in a place where it does not snow much then you may get a way with all season tires. There several mentions on here about what snow or all season tires people use. I personally don't have to change tires, I live it doesn't snow

Do you have 18 or 19" wheels? If the former then you can get Michelin Cross-Climate, they (somehow) work well in the snow and still when it's warm and sunny. I don't think they make them for 19" wheels though (they didn't last time I looked about a year ago). I ended up getting Michelin Alpin 4S winter tyres which were amazing (better than a 4x4 with summer tyres) but then I sold my Mondeo to get my 330e and they weren't (quite) the right size. Surprisingly still got £500 for them on eBay... Not sure I'll bother this year given the 1 day of snow we had last year when I felt very smug but I was amazed at the difference in stopping distance on ice/snow between summer & winter tyres. Even at 30mph it can be 50m!!!

This is a bit old but shows the point...

I wouldn't have a £1000 to spend at the minute. I was thinking is there anything you could do with driving setup such as eco pro mode etc

My street is never gritted when it snows and has a slope up it the best way I found to get up is going backwards.

Turn traction control off to get moving in snow - and i find that sticking a bag of cement in the boot helps :P

Or a 200kg battery pack? I wonder if my 330e will be any better than my 520d?

True! I’ll tell you when I take delivery of mine soon! I think it might make a wee bit of difference.

If you press the DTC button once quickly it goes into "traction mode" which is meant for snow/mud etc. Whether it's any good I've no idea...

Hang on... say what now?
What’s that all about? Sounds like a track mode or something?

No, there's something in the manual which says it's for loose surfaces like snow, gravel and mud... I guess it sets up a different traction control profile and maybe forces the gearbox into higher gear? We shall see if it snows in Wiltshire this year... :-)

I’m thinking no amount of traction control will compensate for inappropriate rubber in the snow and ice. Even four wheel drive cars with incorrect tyre compounds for snow are gash.
I’m based in Wilts too tricky6 and having driven BMW’s for the last fifteen years I just stay at home on the few snowy days we get.
