Decision time. Need some thoughts
OK, so I used to have a 2011 550xdrive, sold it and bought a GMC Denali.
Now selling my 1973 corvette (deeply modded) and looking for an all wheel drive convertible (4 seats). In the running are 2020 i440 xDrive (hard top) 2021 i440 xDrive or M4 (both will require a wait until mid 2020 at the earliest) 2020 MB e450 4matic or AMG e53 4matic (both cost more than the current i440 and the current M is not x drive. Having driven the 2020 models, the interior of the MB is a step in my opinion that the BMW of the same year. But the BMW has more of a driver feel. Not sure if the 2021s are going to be worth the wait. Any help??? I'm torn. Thanks |

Really just trying to gauge the current 4 with hard top vs future 4 soft top and compare to mb e series. A lot of things people here seem to have experience with both mb and bmw.
Is the $$ difference worth it for the mb? A lot more gadgets so comparing the current version of 4 series is a bit unfair, but thats all I have to work with. I’ve read every review on these cars and driven them all (except of course the unreleased 2021 4 series) and they are both great, just different |

Unless you absolutely want a hardtop,I’d wait until the new one comes out. Also,a year ago I test drove 2 e series convertibles with 8,000 miles. They both had electronics problems.

Are you planning to buy or lease the next vehicle?
Any new vehicle regardless of manufacturer will have more issues during the launch year. Leasing the launch year vehicle would be prudent. 2020 440i has been a beneficiary of many production changes to qualify as a good candidate for a purchase or a lease. |

I think a major determinant has to be the new 4 series grill. If, like me, you think it is butt ugly then it is out of the question.
I have always subscribed to the concept that one doesn't want to buy a car in its first year of production. Too many new items to be worked out. I agree with the comment that the Merc E series competes with the BMW 5 series, not the 3/4 series. So it is apples and oranges. BUT, nonetheless, they are your apples and your oranges. So go with what turns you on. |

You gotta decide for yourself but FWIW, I just picked up my 2020 440 and love it. A definite upgrade/improvement over my E90 335 (and it looks awesome) but without being *so* different from the BMWs of the past. I drove the M340 and besides not being available with a manual (and if you want a proper manual, you gotta get the 440, M240, M2, M3, or M4 b/c that's it), it felt too un-BMW-like for my taste. Loved the M4 but it is a lot of car and unless I lived where there was no snow and potholes, it would be was pretty brutal.

Mention a convertible in a snow climate and I picture a sunny weekend cruiser, maybe with kids in the backseat, so that makes me lean towards the larger MB's. But the fact that your previous weekend car was the Vette, I'm trying to picture you being happy with your driving choices being the GMC and something that's more towards the large cushy end rather than sporty. That makes me think that sweet spot in this situation may be a BMW convertible Xdrive. It may be much more fun to drive, especially when you are alone, than the larger MB. Since the models that you are most interested in are not available yet, I'd suggest seeing if there is maybe a '15-'18 BMW 3/4 Series convertible that ticks off most of your boxes. It should be easy to buy already depreciated and at a low point price, (buying a convertible in the winter). Think of it like a short term lease to buy, try out and sell for the new model that you really want. After driving it for a winter, spring, summer you will definitely know if you will be happier with a convertible AWD BMW or MB. And all the models of interest will be available! Don't know how on or off target I was. Hope this helps! |
