The engine is turning back on as I walk away from the car!

Has anyone else had this happen? Three times in the last week my M340 has started itself as I was walking away from it after parking. And NO my key FOB is not being pressed in my pocket... three times. I will say it never happened before I started using the remote start feature (from the key... the app never works for me). But this is at times I'm not using the starter... its after parking after a drive and walking away from the vehicle.

Not sure what to make of it.

Can the problem be repeatedly replicated? Take the vehicle to the dealer as soon as possible.

Haven't seen this problem before.

If car is parked in a nonventilated garage, be careful until car is diagnosed and fixed. My guess is most likely it's a software bug.

It's becoming self aware. But probably software glitch that should immediately be fixed. Or defective key?

Is it a diesel? Diesel cars can do this, petrol cars should not.

And why would a diesel randomly start on its own?

Mine started doing this after the software update. It has happened twice so far in about two weeks.

Was it parked in a 2 car garage the first time it happened?

Nope just regular parking lot. I have it set to auto lock as I walk away so I didn't press any buttons.

Like the other poster if you can replicate it at the dealer they can fix it under warranty. Seems like it starts after you lock it remotely but not hours later just as you walk away.

Dealership looking at it.

Dropped the car off at the dealership today for another issue. Service rep said they had never heard of this problem but a guy in parts said he heard of this in a Z4 before.

They put my key FOB into a reader and said it was detecting faults. Not sure if they will be fixing it or replacing it. I'll update here when I get it back.

Just a thought. I notice that when the car is set to auto start stop enabled the engine starts up automatically when it detects the car in from of you start moving from a stop (i guess this is a convenience thing when you're at a red light it senses when the cars in front you start moving and turns the engine on). Could it be you didn't shut the engine but rather the engine stopped automatically when you parked and you thought you turned of the engine as the engine was now off then when you walked away the car detected movement in front of it and then had the engine start back up.
