Laser Lights

Hi all,

Had my car a little over a week now and I am have noticed that when auto main beam is enabled even when behind a car it doesn't turn them off and most of the times it doesn't dip when a car is coming.

My F30 never had this, especially when behind a car?

Anyone else noticed this?

Thanks
Si

I don’t have the laser lights but I do have the adaptive lights thingy (although thinking it may be standard now but wasn’t on my old one)... I’ve noticed it doesn’t seem very adaptive. In my 220d it would be on and off all the time on unlit roads and it would instantly cut the main beam when another car came round a corner. Now it just doesn’t seem to do anything, ever! Not seen it in action once and can’t find anywhere in any of the settings to see what’s going on with it. The green icon for it is always on, on the dash but that’s it. Nothing happens!

Glad it isn't just me!

My old one was exactly the same, it worked great! Now the new one just seems to want to blind people and with Laser lights it's very bright!

Adaptive is not the same as high beam assist, which is now only available with the laser lights.

So what it does is subtly alter the beam pattern as the road speed changes, and moves when maneuvering (as fad I can tell), but it won't use high beam and move the light around other cars as the previous system did.

Right, that would make sense.
I think I can manually turn the lights off ‘auto’ so might try that to see if I can notice what trickery it’s not doing! Just doesn’t seem as good as the old one, anyway...

I have the laser lights. They're brilliant. I've found them faster to react to oncoming traffic than my F30 LEDs, and they have a much better shadowing of the car in front or oncoming vehicle. They seem less likely to be confused by reflective road signs too.

Sadly, the standard adaptive LEDs don't seem to do anything out of the ordinary.

Whereas the Laserlights have the proper High Beam Assistant and the Selective Beam so that they can do the all-singing and all-dancing patterns around other cars.

Sadly only due to BMW UK that is.
In the rest of Europe where we can get Adaptive LEDs with HBA, they work great. Tilting in all 4 directions and high beam lights up in darker areas.

Standard adaptive's don't spread the beam around vehicles in front but they do swivel to follow bends and adjust the beam height depending on speed/road conditions. They also have a cornering function at slow speeds to light up junctions and roundabouts. And they're pretty bright whether standard or main beam. If you do loads of night driving the Laser Lights may be worth it but the standard ones aren't too shabby...

That's very annoying to hear, though I'm curious as to what they cost?

To have adaptive LEDs as bog standard is pretty incredible, but disappointing that no option to add HBA to them for a few hundred quid, and only by spending £1500 on the visibility package can you get them.

Well, we start with plain boring LEDs, add appx £1000 for adaptive LEDs and then only £120 for HBA

I'd have happily paid £120 for HBA

As would many people. It's just a cynical marketing thing to get people to cough up for laser lights... I wouldn't be surprised if the hardware is all there and it's just a software option to enable it...

Yes, that's a good point... would be great if someone can resolve that through coding.

Provided that you have Option 431 (interior/exterior mirror package), which I also assume would be a UK standard pack, then most of hardware should be there; apart from probably the 2 button left stalk.

I'm almost certain I seen a promotation video from BMW where the user did exactly that and purchased HBA through iDrive.

The video you mention was discussed here. Unfortunately, it doesn't look as if the additional hardware was added to UK cars. The video shows the HBA assist button on the stalk - pressing it brings up the purchase option. Unfortunately, the stalk in non HBA specced cars does not include the additional button, at least not in my Sept 19 build car.

Once upon a time I could have gone to Maplin's and bought a "button"... ;-)

Video is for the new 1 series (F40); maybe they realized two expensive to manufacture 2 different parts and this way the lower your capital expenditure for about 0.3%
