My M340i’s Active Shutter doesn't work? High oil temperature!

Been driving it for 3 months, the oil temperature got to 105-110c / 220-230f during normally driving, got to 115c 240f after a short aggressive drive.

Also I realized that the shutters only open bottom part and never opens upper part. Is this normal?

I also own a 2018 Audi S5, the oil temperature never goes above 90 for normal drive and never above 118 for aggressive drive during summer time.

Anyone have the same issue? Please share your experience, thanks.

I have to start by asking

Why are you comparing specs from another manufacturer ?!

Bmws tend to run hot , but if you are really worried take it to a dealer have them scan it for faults . An electric/mechanical error of the shutters would be easy to check using ISTA.

Side Note : Dont tell the dealer "But my audis temp is at 90 C" its the most annoying thing a customer can do

Thanks for your reply, I'll go check it out next week. May I ask what's your operating oil temperature?

I believe the B58 in Sport mode the car runs hotter than in Comfort mode, has to do with optimizing for fuel economy versus optimizing for horsepower. This was the case with the F30 B58 340i's and I'd expect it to be true on the G20 M340i as well.

The temp ranges you're talking about are the same for my M340i as well.

The only thing I have to add is that the upper shutters should be open. Mine always are in the mornings when I get to work. Once engine cools down, then it closes.

I checked with the dealership, they told me the 108-115 c oil temperature is normal, but they don't know why the upper shutters never open even when the time we start my car ( dealership test a 2018 5 series and the upper shutters open when we start the car) so wired.... I'm assuming it's stay closed because of the winter temperature 🤷*♂️🤷*♂️

Thanks for letting me know. Now I'm less worried about the oil temperature.

did your dealer scan for shadow codes to see if they are truly stuck?

They did scan it and nothing wrong with it. Oil temperature stays around 108-114C. I'm guessing G20 3 series' kidney grill doesn't open when start up like the G30 5 series' kidney grill.🤷*♂️

So the grill will not open on startup as the engine needs to get up to temperature quickly for efficiency and emissions reasons.

And yes, those temperatures are normal. Nothing to worry about.

Yeah the grill doesn't open when you start the car - on cold days in the M340i, I am impressed at how quickly the oil temperature gets up to operating temperature (you need to look at the Sport Displays) - where my F30 340i would sometimes just come up to operating temperature after my 9 mile / 20 min commute, the M340i is coming up to operating temperature after ~3 miles or about 5 mins. It actually isn't far behind the coolant temperature (measured in the dash on the G20).

Thank you for these useful information, the kidney grill doesn't bother me anymore 👍🏻
