Thoughts on 20inch wheels for F30?
I found some wheels that are 20 inch rims they're 9 spoke and was wondering if 20 inch was too big, they would be my winter tire maybe later switch to summer or all season. Thoughts????

Also would running 255/35/20 all around fit on a 340i xdrive?

The ride won't be very comfortable, less sidewall, less cushioning, you will feel every pothole, plus 20" winter tires will be much more expensive, heavier wheels too. 18" would be an ideal setup for winter, with 225/45 tires. Even 17" would be worth considering.

Using 20s for a winter tire is a really bad idea, the required very low profile tires give zero protection from pothole damage to both the tires and wheels. For that matter I wouldn't use 20s for summer either, the very short sidewall gives a hard ride. They may be a 10 as far as looks go, but they're a 1 for practicality.

Depending where you live (how bad the winter is). I have 20" on my summers. As others have said, other than it looks good, my car is the least comfortable to drive (I didn't say it's not fun to drive). You feel everything and anything... Very little tolerance with potholes and runflats on 20" are expensive.
I downsized to 19 with my winter tires (non runflat). They're much better. I honestly don't see any reason to go with 20"... Mine came with 20". 19 with summer and 18 for winter is probably best. If your roads are clean and don't have snow in the winter, then yes 20" won't hurt. |

20s in Illinois is asking for trouble. Stick with 18s for winter and do 19s for summer.

Has to be a wind up, who in their right mind would even consider 20” rims for winter tyres?

You live in LA, where 20s aren't a terribly dumb idea, especially if you want to feel every bump. The OP lives in Illinois, where they're a particularly dumb idea in winter, and if he drives in Chicago not all the smart in summer either.

I'd only consider a forged, lightweight set of 20's living in Los Angeles. Never for a winter set. Unfortunately the majority of 20's under $3k weigh quite a bit more than my OEM 437m's.

I'm deliberating the same for next summer.
These wheels look the nuts. Just wish the front was a tad more concave. https://rmsmotoring.com/forum/thread...n-more.194935/ |

20" for winter is a bad set up stay with 18" or 19", I had the 20" 405 wheels on my F30 335i and they ran OK.

When I was in high school, I was pretty cool for having stock 16'' rims on my 2004 WRX. Most compact sedans were running 15'' tires or less. If you were really high performance, you had 17'' rims.
I feel like we are getting a little carried away these days on street cars. The 18 inch staggered wheels on my F30 ride well enough. I actually hated the 225/40R 18's all around on my last car that did not have adjustable suspension (MK7 GTI). It was harsh and in that situation, 17 inch would be the sweet spot for comfort, performance and fuel economy. With these cars, I feel like anything over 18'' is getting a little carried away on a street car. To each their own though!

It's only for aesthetics. Big rims with tiny tires don't do anything as well as smaller rims with larger tires. If there was any performance reason to run larger than a 15 inch wheel Nascar and Indy would. Formula 1 uses 13 inch rims.

There is a performance reason to run larger than 15"wheels. I don't think 15" wheels would clear my stock sliding calipers. Smaller sidewall will also translate to more road feel and less flex. I am happy with 225/45, would consider a 40% sidewall for performance driving in the summer.

Totally agree. Why we have this trend of anything bigger than 16-17 inch tires is beyond me. It might look 10% better but the ride is always 200% worse, completely ruins the car in my opinion. My car came with 18s and I wish they were 16s to be honest, I downgraded to 17's for winter wheels/tires, just because I can't go any smaller due to the brakes. I am looking forward to throwing my winter set on, the ride always improves a bit. This is beating a dead horse I am sure, don't get me started on run flats. If you had those on 20 inch rims your fillings would be falling out and your car would shake itself apart probably. |

For what it’s worth, I wouldn’t go with 20’ wheels anywhere you actually have a winter. I just cracked my 19 on a pothole on the way in to work last week. It was a pain in the ass and expensive not to mention I am still hearing it from my wife.
18’s are a good idea and still look nice. |

The only legitimate use I've come across for 20s is the one employed by my dealer F&I guy. He has a 20 with tire in his office, the tire shredded and the rim cracked, the result of hitting a pothole. He uses it to try and sell rim and tire damage insurance, for $100 a month. It worked on me, but not in the way he wanted. I didn't get the insurance, I got 17s.
