SES and odd codes - GPM and thermostat?
My SES came on the other day. I believe I have low coolant temp (not seeing it get above ~72-74C on cold mornings) but these codes don't match at all with the one I got ~3yrs ago when my previous thermostat totally shit the bed:
--Engine / Motor-- *** 49A5:LIN bus communication *** *** 4A74:Embassy (ST GSG LIN, 0x18, LIN) *** *** 4A79:Message (error status GSG LIN, 0x17, LIN) *** *** 3EED:Power Management quiescent current (Layer PMRUHVERL) *** (These are from Carly, FYI) 49A5 sounds like possibly a glow plug controller based on searches here 4A74 also sounds like glow plug controller 4A79 also sounds like glow plug controller 3EED sounds like maybe electrical/battery related, so maybe also ties to the GPM if it's cycling on/off due to coolant temp Also found this great tidbit from Mark M: https://www.e90post.com/forums/showp...5&postcount=13 Any idea if replacing the thermostat will fix the glow plug errors? Or does this usually kill the module requiring replacement? |

The first thing to do when weird electrical shyt starts happening is charge the battery. I mean REALLY charge it with a proper float charger that will bring it all the way up.

Yep, left it on all night and no changes. Battery is about 3 years old as well so should be in excellent shape.

Replaced the thermostat over the weekend. Unlike the one I replaced ~4yrs ago, this one seemed to be in perfect shape. The tabs were not broken and all seemed as it should be. I also replaced the GPM... fuck they really buried that thing in there didn't they?
Anyway, SES is gone after a reset. However the car still seems slow to warm up. Monitoring via Carly, I only just reached full operating temp of 88C right as I pulled in to the parking lot at work, which is 8.2 miles from my house, roughly 50/50 street/freeway. It was cold this morning, around 37F, but that still seems very slow to fully warm up. Anyone have a similar experience? |

That's a normal warmup. If your thermostat was bad you would drop below 80c while on the highway.
I have a 7 mile commute to work and get to 82-84 depending on traffic, I wait a lot at stop lights. It's a new thermostat that was tested in a pot of water, so I know it's good. On the highway I can maintain 86-88 and that's where bad thermostats show their issue, the airflow through the radiator would drive you below 80. |
