328i Coupe Potential
Hey guys ive been saving up money for an e46 m3, but lately ive grown to love the new e92 coupes. Unfortunately, i havnt been able to save up enough for a 335i (which is to drool for), but i have enough for a 328i.. so i just had a question about the potential of it. I know the 335i has amazing potential, but does the 328i have any? I mean having a naturally aspired engine vs a twin turbo is obviously a big difference, but i just wanted to know if it was capable of being modded up to the point where the e46 m3 and the 335i are stock. Do you see the potential? Or should i just save a little more and wait for the 335i?
Thanks in advance, Charles

Save more and get what you're drooling for. From what I've seen around here, all the engine mods are for the N54 bi-turbo.

the 328 is a great car stock for stock and has some good potential..but it wont add up to what the 335 is or the m3...like my salesman told me when I bought my 330i..."go ahead and get what you want, because anything less and you will never be happy....." and Im glad I got the 330i..I would have regretted getting something else, something cheaper, ....the payments are more than I wanted, even though I can pay them, but they make me enjoy the car more and appreciate what I have being 23 years old

You get the 328, you'll be going up a dead end street. There is no potential for modification at all, none that will yield any significant performance increase anyway. The e46 M3 is still an excellent choice if you like the twisties, if you care more about straight line speed then the 335 is what you need to be saving for. Good luck.

If you end up getting a 328 then do NOT drive a 335...ever! You will regret the decision and it will haunt you until its sold. I had a loaner 328 the other day while mine was getting some service and couldnt believe how much of a dog it was in comparison. Plus, you can tune the 335 much easier and get a lot more bang for your buck.

BTW, I was also looking to buy a used e46 M3 and I almost got one with an SMG. After driving the 335 and realizing how I would have QUICKLY been annoyed by the jerky SMG transmission, Im glad I made the decision I did. With a tune, you will beat an e46 M3 and be a lot more comfortable doing so. The only thing that I wish the car had is the limited slip that they put in the M3's but its a small price to pay for the other benefits.
