18s for winter tires?

Anyone has run staggered 18s (162) on an e90 with winter tires in the GTA snow?

Would that work or need 17s?

no need to run staggered with 18s. You can fit 225/40/18 all around with your 162. Winter tires...thinner > wider

Thanks Soni - If I run 224/40/18 all around - would that work in the snow or should I go to 17? Do you know if any of the members here have run 18s in the winter?

I run my stock 189's on blizzacks and it rides nicely. Does a good job in the snow as long as it's not too deep. You have awd, 18's will be perfect and look good too.

you have Xi which you don't need to worry a thing in winter. I ran Dunlop3D 225/40/18 all around on my 189 last winter, only one day I almost had problem, but the rest of the winter I was doing ok.

I ran Hanhook IceBear W300 225/40/18 all 4 corners on my 189 and never have any issue at all.... BTW, I got my car right after the huge snow storm on March, so my car never run on snow neway

I bought a set of ASA non-staggered 17s. It's good to downsize for winter. Just watch the offset, that's all. Also having a separate wheel set is better than having to remove/install tires twice a year. Can damage rims as well as tires + costs of mounting.

I'm running 235's all around. I know thinner is better, but I just hated the idea of going down from a 255 in the back to a 225.

Only issue for freddy is that a 225 is going to look stretched on the rears. And he won't really be able to rotate them front to back even though they're 225's all around.

I would buy a set of used OEM 17's and run those. Then he could go with a square setup and rotate tires now and then. Or get a set of aftermarket 17's or 18's with same rim width back and front to allow rotation.

dude, you have xi, don't worry about getting 18's. They'll work. I have 235/40/18 Dunlop SP's for winter. I didn't wanna go with 225's and ruin the look of the rear end for 7 months of the year.

actually, I don't think thinner is better. Thicker gives you more surface area to grip with on ice and snow so you won't slide too much. just my 2 cents.

The whole thicker thinner things depends on the type of roads, covered in snow or covered in ice.

Most of use have some snow days but prob more ice days. Unless you are out in Halifax or Nfld which is sh*t days when it comes down.

I am gonna use my 18's and go with a 225/45-18 or a 235/45-18 all around.

^^^ what he said... I'm planning on running winters on my xi with stock 189s with 235s as well and then grabbing a set of 19s for the summer. I don't think 18s will be any problem at all given x-drive. Just don't want that winter-tyre-pizza-cutter look.

Just a different thought for you. I ran 162's with runflats thru the winter, and will be getting 17's for sure. The 401 and other roads were brutal for potholes. Each hit was bone-jarring, and you're always wondering if your 18" OEM wheel$ are toast...

You beat me to that!!

That is precisely why I use 17" winters in both cars! A bit of extra sidewall for the peace of mind.

I think it make more sence that he use his 162 and put winter tires since he is planning to get summer set rims and tires. This way he wouldn't end up 3 sets of rims and tires.

You gotta step up the side profile to a 40 or 45. You can still do that on 18's.

I bet RFT+winter= harshest ride ever. Ditch the RFT, they are shitty in summer, imagine how brutal they are in winter

I am getting 235/40-18 Michelin Pilot Alpin PA3, gonna be awesome
