Naked and afraid
Well not actually naked but with stock charge pipe and JB4 on 80,000 mile car I don't rev past 5,000 for fear of the charge pipe popping off. It looks like a P.I.T.A. to replace it by myself. How much should I expect to pay to have a shop change the charge pipe?

Should be a few hundred with a quality indi shop, unless you get rreeeaaallllll comfortable with the plenty of YouTube DIY’s available. If you’re not comfortable with the DIY, the price really doesn’t matter as you’ll have to pay regardless. FYI, it’s not a matter of “if” but “when” at this point... .

CTS chargepipe in the mail I'm definitely in the preventive maintenance bucket. It looks to be pretty straight forward DIY, as I'm pretty handy with a wrench.
Are most people taking the intercooler out completely, and/or, installing the pipe in two or one pieces?

I'm going to try to leave intercooler in place, pull out and install from top.....I feel like my blood pressure may rise, but hoping I have watched enough DIY and read enough threads to know the big gotchas. |

There was not enough clearance from the top. I went from the bottom. Tried to do it as one piece but could get the orientation correct so I did it in 2 parts. It's just such a tight space and you really can't see what you are doing.

I'd expect in the $100-$200 range to get it done at a shop. If you're comfortable with basic car work and have a set of jack stands, I've give it a go. Just remember to be careful with o-ring placement on both sides of the charge pipe. Installation of the two piece charge pipes is much easier than removal of the OEM one-piece.
EDIT I actually just noticed you have an xDrive. The half shaft might make it a bit harder. |
