TPMS for winter wheels ?

Now that winter is coming around the corner, I've started to think about winter tire setup.
One place asked for $400 CDN for TPMS. I think that's pretty high. Where can I buy online ?

I thought sensors on each wheel had gone away 10 years ago. My last 2 cars, both with TPMS, used the ABS system to measure pressure. I didn't need to buy sensors for the winter wheels. Why does BMW still put them on each wheel?

Can indirect TPMS (the kind that uses ABS) tell you what the pressure of the tire is, or just that one tire's pressure is low compared to the other 3?

It would just tell you which tire was low, but not the pressure in each tire.

Can you add another set of TPMS sensors w/o deleting the original 4 from the system?

Yes, the system is designed to only read sensors that are in motion. So even if you had a spare tire with a sensor...it won't send data to the iDrive because it is stationary.

When you have two sets of wheels/tires (summer/winter)...when you dismount & remount the other set...all you need to do is go into iDrive and reset the system accordingly...and the wheels/tires that were newly mounted will begin to send their data (including their location) to the RDC control unit which then sends that data onto the iDrive for you to see.
