Cigarette lighter socket Dash Cam

The post refers to UK, but as my new X5 is built in Spartanburg maybe the folks in the States have a similar problem.

Having had a Nextbase dash cam in my other car I thought I would choose this again as it has been a reliable model and does what it says on the tin, for a reasonable price £50. So fitted it to the X5 and neatly tucked the wire behind the trim down to the cig lighter, using this rather than hard wire, only to find that the plug doesn't fit evenly, you have to move it around, and its a tight fit, and will only power up if I press and hold it at a certain angle. So not plug and forget.

So my question is, are there American spec cig lighters that get fitted to European models ? are there generic spec holders or should it just be used for a cigarette lighter ? Anyone else had this problem ?

Yup. Apparently the X5 has slighter deeper than normal sockets, so a lot of them don’t work.

There was a post back in May with several suggestions on how to fix this.

I bought a dash cam also. I used the rear socket to add my own socket extension with two 12-volt sockets and two USB. It was one I already had and works in the rear BMW socket, thankfully.

I didn’t hide the wires on the dash, but ran the cord to the rear socket and tucked the wires under the floor mats. Mine also has a rear camera, so running all those cords required an extension I bought on amazon.

I know folks are aghast at the wires showing, but I wanted to test the dash cam before doing anything permanent. It is a Crosstour dashcam and it works great, and the wires don’t bother me and make it easier to remove the dashcam when I want to change the SD card.

Solution

so the solution to the plug supplied with the Nextbase Dash cams is to file off the round edges half way up the plug so you have a straight line then it will sit in neatly and connect.

I just installed my NextBase dash cam (which is better than the Blackvue imo), and after spending a few back-bending hours neatly tucking the wires behind various headliners and pillars, I discovered that the darn thing wouldn't turn on after plugging it into the 12 Volt cigarette lighter adapter underneath the rear seat climate control.

At first I thought my old camera had died, but then I plugged it in to a USB port and it came alive. My next thought was that there was something wrong with the 12 V power, but the front port near the cup holder also didn't work. I was stumped, then I found this thread.

The plug fit in perfectly as far as I could tell, but I guess it wasn't enough as someone with the same cam also had issues. Before I file the edges of the plug with a Drexel, I purchased various 12 V plug adapters, that I can plug the OE plug in to.

Did you try a mirror tap? If you take down the map light console there are numerous wire harnesses you can tap into for 12v. The whole process takes about 30 min.

Yeah I'm kind hesitant splicing into anything on a leased car.

No splicing involved. You literally stick a wire into the back of a connector. You can remove it and it looks like you were never there.
