Took a nice hit to my Runflat

I have some construction near my house which means there's almost always road debris. Normally they're good at using a sweeper to clean up during business hours but not after. I, unfortunately, hit a piece of rebar which managed to perfectly penetrate my sidewall somehow. I have a tiny amount of damage to the wheel itself but nothing over the top. I was able to make it home and park in my garage which is nice. I don't like run-flats but here they seemed to work well enough. I've since ordered a new set of Pirelli PZ4 run-flats from Tirerack which arrive Wednesday. I hate run-flats but accepted using them for situations like this. For what it's worth I have about 10700 miles and my rear tires have 7/32 tread fronts have 6/32 so they have a good 4-5000 miles left on them. I'll keep my old tires (the 3 which are good) just in case I have another issue so I'm not stuck waiting on tires again.

Edit: spare tire fits for the record, barely by maybe 1/4in but it works. I won't drive it like this unless it's 3 miles to the closest shop. New tires should be here Wednesday

Sorry to hear about your bad luck. Best of luck in the future.

I've purchased from Tire Rack before, but never needed to file a claim with their free two year road hazard warranty. Seems like it would be pretty valuable with run flats since they can't be patched.

I know people have patched runflats without any problems, but no tire should be patched when the damage involves the sidewall like this.

That sucks but why not replace with non Runflats?

There are no 21" staggered options I'd run. Normal P Zeros, Scorpion Verde AS (0 traction with their A instead of AA rating), and some other mediocre ones. I want a set of Michelins but even if I ran a square 275/40 set up which would look weird on my rear wheels there aren't any options I'd like. Ideally, I'd run Michelin Pilot Sport AS 3+'s but they don't make them in a size remotely viable without downsizing to 20" wheels which I'm not doing. The cost isn't worthwhile for me to throw $2-5k on a set of wheels when I'll have the car maybe 2.5 more years tops.

This is my first experience with these tires and with runflats, so apologies for the basic question, but is 15,000 miles typical? I generally get much better utilization out of tires. TIA

Wow too bad, I have the Michelin Pilot Sport A staggered on the Shelby and they're amazing. That's why I ordered the 20 inch wheels and a spare when it's time to replace I'm going with the Michelin Pilots!

I was also disappointed in the tire choices available for the 21 and 22 inch wheels. I’m going to go with the 20s (and spare) and switch to Conti DWS once the original runflats wear out.

I wish I got the 20's in hindsight but it's not worth swapping to them now. OEM wheels run about $3600 and the cost difference between those + tire options over 60k miles don't work out. I could easily buy the set anyways but I'd rather not just throw money away for fun when I have other projects pending. I just finished a full rebuild of my PC at home for $5k and want to work on some other stuff I have pending now

I run the Conti ExtremeContact DWS on my X3, had them on my 330 and Golf diesel. They've been a really great tire, always go to 40K tread life and when new, increase the gas mileage by 3, just a bonus really. Quiet and grip well, no complaints.

Agreed. I have them on my 2014 X5 and find them to be a big improvement over the OEM Michelin runflats that came with the vehicle.

I know people have patched runflats without any problems, but no tire should be patched when the damage involves the sidewall like this.
For sure run flats can be patched when penetration is in the tread area and not within 1" of sidewall. The key is to address the tire ASAP and don't drive on it with zero pressure or near zero pressure. Treat it like a go flat tire and keep adding air and get it repaired quickly.

However, if you have no choice but to drive on it with zero pressure, it's likely best to replace it. Especially if you drove on it for several miles with zero inflation.

Do you always to replace the whole set, or individual tire? My mechanic said for 4*4, it has to be the whole set. True?

If it had to be the complete set of 4, then BMW would not be offering a rather small diameter spare tire. You can replace just the damaged one.

ok doing the whole set becuase it needs to be done soon anyways and I'd rather just spend the money and not worry

Believe it or not, this is the VERY first picture proof on the forum that *a* stock spare fits over the M Sport brakes! I have, obviously, grabbed this incontrovertible evidence and immediately hit my dealer in Canada to get it sourced here once and for all. From the pics, it is obvious the spare rim is 21" and the dealer says they can only see 19" spare in the system (likely proving a previous theory that there are two spare sizes that might be required depending on the M Sport brake option).

Their request, AndroidRobot, is to identify the BMW part number of that specific spare or the entire spare kit. Any chance you can identify that somehow? All of Canada would be in your debt.

I didn't think about that, well the front calipers +discs are massive. I'm shocked it fits, even if barely. I'll take pics of the P/N on the tire once it's off my car again. the pic you circled is my factory 21" wheel of course. I doubt there's a sole P/N on the kit since it came with my car. I'm sure one does exist just not physically on the kit. I'll take pics of the tire/wheel since that's the most important piece and whatever else you'd like to see

finally got my new tires installed today. it seems the bolts were over torqued from the factory because some were stuck in the wheel others had that silver ring from the bolt stuck to my wheel. I'm not sure what BMW is doing but is bet they'd blame everyone but themselves.

edit: pics of the spare as requested

My X5 originally came in with 22s, but I wanted the 20s instead.
I then noticed that the 20s looked very odd (smaller) and sunken inwards a bit too much for my liken, so Im gonna switch back to the 22s and just buy the wheel and tire coverage. I think the 20's (740M) looks nice, but I wish the rears had at least 305s, but all tires are 275s.
I hope I don't regret going back to 22s as Im worried about getting too many flats or blowouts in the DFW area.
