Tire road hazard insurance

New owner here. Can someone share info about tire road hazard insurance? Many renovation/construction around my community. Do I need to worry about the $300 a piece run flat tires coming with the new X5?

$300 USD? In my dreams. Here in Canada when I got a nail in my 2200km X5 into the PZero 21" rear RFT a bit over a month ago, full bill was a bit over $1000 CAD. Ludicrous. Pirelli is still evaluating whether their original equipment road hazard "warranty" will cover it — it really is a no brainer, but they are over a month backlogged, perhaps that tells you something. So some kind coverage might be worthwhile.

+1 to it being worth it; in the last 2 years, I've replaced 7 tires on the Bay Area roads on my and my wife's BMW's. That's 7 tires with 14K total miles driven. Brutal.

You pay $50 on the insurance we got from BMW to replace them, usually takes a couple of days. Not a huge deal for us because we barely drive (weekends only), and they give us loaners, but super worth it for me.

Don't go on Van Ness if you drive in San Francisco.

Is tire road hazard insurance an offering from car insurance companies or BMW dealerships?

New car may not automatically be covered under the manufacturer’s road hazard warranty. So good luck on the claim. Still, does the deal or 3rd party offer some kind of insurance? If so, how much are they?

Ours are all from the dealership, which is the way to go in my view. I used to work in insurance, and would not recommend private/3rd party insurance: it can raise your risk profile/insurance. Much simpler to just pay upfront and just have the peace-of-mind.

An additional benefit: if you find yourself with a cracked rim and tire damage, it's a one stop shop.

Take with a grain of salt, as I don't know cost of external warranties, but strongly recommend from BMW

Mixed feelings based on my experience. In 2011 I paid $1300 for 5 years worth of tire / rim insurance. I blew 3 tires and one rim in the first 4 years which would have cost me about $1075 for the rim and tires not including any installation cost that would be included. The last 3 1/2 years no insurance and no issues. The reason I have mixed feelings is the time I blew out the rim and tire on a highway pot hole I was on the phone, (yes Bluetooth) and distracted and probably would have avoided the sink hole which used half of what I paid for the insurance. I don’t think its worth it unless you live in a state that has numerous highway and back road pot holes. I won’t add it to our future 2020 X5 order and order the spare instead.

In addition with the warranty you are stuck with the OEM tires. Once mine ran out I replaced mine with Michelin Premiers all season RF’s which ride and handle much better than the Continental RF’s that were OEM.

Any tire-only insurance from dealer? Coming from traditional tires, pothole is not a major concern. It is more the nails and sidecuts that troubled me.

I understand Discount Tire will sell you a tire only policy. I don't have a store within 100 miles so I went with the plan sold by my selling dealer. I also bought the wheel coverage because I am leasing and don't want to deal with any damage issues at lease turn in.

Unfortunately the tire/wheel coverage sold by BMW does not cover all damage issues you may have at lease turn in. The latest BMW coverage I reviewed a couple of months ago does not repair a wheel as long as it holds air, therefore not covering any number of cosmetic items that would potentially be an issue at lease turn in.

I misspoke. I bought the plan from my dealer but it is a third party plan that does cover wheel and tires including cosmetic damage. It also includes glass damage and body dents. I believe it is called 4Assurance. It wasn't cheap but it's peace of mind and ensured I will not have to pay for any issues during my 3 year lease.

What are people being charged for road hazard insurance on tires. They wanted $40/mo which I thought was insane and declined.

How negotiable are the dealers for wheel and tire insurance?
Ive been offered $2000.
Can I call dealers throughout the country to shop for the best deal?

Sounds like you purchased what dealers call excess wear and tear coverage. These policies usually cover worn tires and other vehicle damage up to $x. My dealer sells one that gives $5K in coverage for lease end damage repairs. Very few exclusions. Good for people who don't take good care of their cars, parents of unruly kids, urban dwellers who often end their lease with bumper damage due to parallel parking amateurs around you, or for the times you return car with worn tires.

I blew a tire on the 95 outside DC a few weeks ago. Continued driving for about 35 miles with 0 pressure, and pulled into a dealer unannounced around 2pm. They had me on a new tire (just one, the car only had 3,500 miles on it) in 2 hours for $350. The rim is a little dinged up, but fine.

IMO wheel and tire coverage has gotten out of hand. I'm told reason is mostly insurance fraud. People who see their tires wear, and they "accidentally" get a nail in them. Bad for the honest people.

With today's pricing in most cases you'd need 5 tire replacements to make the policy be worthwhile. Remember these policies have a deductible and there's some dealer charges not covered.

For wheel damage, these policies typically don't cover cosmetic wheel damage. Most are limited to the wheel being so out of round the tire won't hold air. So don't expect much from this part of the policy.

Rim dinged up from driving on deflated tire? Shouldn't happen, sidewall should hold up if you have run flats. May I ask which tires are on your X?

Or was wheel damaged by dealer staff r&r tire?

Never purchased tire and wheel insurance before BUT with the cost of a replacement 20" runflat and the cost of a new wheel I decided to go for it. It added about $30 to my monthly lease payment. It's peace of mind with no surprise at lease turn in time.

You have 123.75mm in sidewall height. I'd be surprised if you damage a wheel to the point where it won't hold air. And if you do odds are it will be an insurance claim to repair the suspension damage. Obviously there are situations where you could bend a wheel without other damage, but not terribly likely on the X5 20".

Wheel damage is far more of an issue when sidewall height is under 100mm.

But for $30/mo you've got other coverage so that's a positive.

$30/month is tire and wheel only. The glass and dent was extra.

Good question. I didn't look closely enough at the rim when we brought it in and only noticed the scrapes when I picked it up. Was in a hurry so I took it and ran. I had the car washed and the rim cleaned up pretty well, not perfect.

I'm on the Bridgestones.
