RECALL... but...more HP for free?

Got a call from dealer last week that they need to perform a recall.
went to the dealer and a day later I got my car back with a paper w/ description that reads:

- Service Standard Scope
- Brake Fluid/ Service
- Engine Oil
- Recall: 07e-a01 DME program

I have my car for the last 15 months or so and I've driving beemers for the last 10 years and trust me... I do know when something is different.

So, I got my car back and at first I notice the stronger and quicker braking power with new pads. So I was driving in calm mode to do not brake my teeth on the steering wheel.

But after 2 days when the brakes settle down, I got back to a more sporty driving.... and...Surprice!

rememeber.... I've been driving this car for at least 15 months, so I really know what lies under the hood..... but....I truly believe that the car now has between 20 to 30 more HP. ....Specially above 3/4000 rpm, I got my head smashed to the headrest...

Even though I know that when you get your oil change you can feel some smoothness on the ride, but I've never felt this before. And I only have 13,000 miles, so is not that the engine has weared out for 5 years and now with new oil feels fresher...

The dealer advisor mentioned that they need extra time to do the job, because they need to reprogram the entire system, and in fact they did something because my radio lost all the stations, (battery off)
Does anyone know what is that recall?
Could be possible that they tweeked the chip?

So, I dont know.... but the fact is that I truly have a more responsive and powerfull engine that 2 days ago. For real...no BS

Everytime I change the oil or wash my car, I notice the boost in HP.

It's probably they reprogrammed it with 29.2, and you have this lag now. Your car was smooth before, and now with the lag you get your head smashed to the headrest after 3K RPM.

I know my car as well, got it in 12/06. I bought some weird tire spray on HSN and I swear my a/c is at least 7 degrees cooler now and my car is handling like it's got 285/25-20's on the rear. Sometimes you just have to know how to buy snake oil when you see it.

We're all poking fun at the OP, but the scary thing is there are people who really believe their car is smoother, faster, more powerful, quieter, after an oil change. Pretty scary. Oh, and that they get better mpg with super over regular, too.

I heard if that modding your car with "DTM style" mirrors gives you faster trap speed from reduced aero dynamic drag and having "BMW Power" is worth +5hp per sticker

The "perception" of more power is because they have re-flashed his ECU and therefore the computer is again learing his driving style. Nothing new to experiancing this but the OP deffinitly didnt get any extra HP. Within a week or two, it will feel the same as before.

OP, can you try to find out from your SA what was involved in the Recall: 07e-a01 DME program. Is this related to resetting your ECU or something else. If there is recall, I think you should ask what it is about and what was involved.

ummm... you DO get better mileage with premium gas over regular. The knock sensors in the car tell the computer how close each cylinder is to knock. The computer will then advance ignition timing up to impending knock. Premium has a higher resistance to knock, so the ignition is advanced further by the computer. Advanced ignition equals better power, better throttle response, and more efficient combustion (advanced ignition leads to more optimal burn speed and therefore more complete combustion).

Now that is pretty scary!

So...if it is in real that the car its been reset to the original set-up, even though I'm not 100% buying that theory, since I do not recall that power feeling when I got it first.

anyhow... if it is in fact what happened...
How do I keep the software running offering this feeling?

I'm not F1 Nick Heidfeld, but I drive very sporty and one time a week I hit 125mph ...so I guess that "my driving Style" software should be a kept as it is now and not slowly downgrading the car.

So... my question is why the car "learned" different or below of what it is capable if Im really pushing it almost everyday....

POSSIBLY true - but rarely at small throttle openings and with RPM in the 1800-2500 range (such as leaving lights or cruise) is ignition timing anywhere close to maximum.. so octane is very likely not a factor.

People can believe what they want to. I felt exactly the same thing with my 06' after they did the entire software update. I reset the transmission a week before taking it in as well. However after a few weeks it went back to almost like before. My conclusion is that they tuned the stock set up to be more aggressive. Whether there was actual power gain at the stock set up, which it did feel like, you'll have to dyno it.

They reset the software and flogged the hell out of it for a bit to make it adapt to performance driving..then handed you the keys

I knew it! son of a!

By all seriousness, it felt like driving in the DS mode on the go and braking, but when you let off the gas it doesn't hold onto the gear for as long as the DS mode.
