M Sport Air Filters?
Did anyone knew that there's two different kind of OEM air filters?
I ordered an air filter off turner motorsports. I go to change it today and I noticed my old one has a layer of black/carbon filter on the regular filter. The one I got from turner motorsports didnt have this black/carbon layer, just the yellow filter with the orange gasket. I did some browsing and apparently I had the m sport air filter (yellow filter with black carbon lining). Will I be ok if I run the filter without the black/carbon lining since thats what was sent to me? 2014 435i RWD btw. This is what I had. This is what I was sent. |

Your car is just a ticking time bomb if you put that replacement filter in.......................... All jokes aside, yes you will be perfectly fine using the replacement filter!

For some reason the M Sport filters have the charcoal element attached. Both filters are the same dimensions and will seat into the airbox the same. There is no equivalent K&N filter for the M-Sport part number, which confused me at first.

You don't need it. It's supposed to be for emissions reasons but it doesn't actually do much anyway so I'd save the $20 and just get the paper filter. Theoretically you'd get a bit more performance if you run the only paper filter since there's less restriction, but that's theoretical and you won't actually see any differences.
I believe the charcoal filter is there to prevent gasoline fumes from exiting the intake to the atmosphere. I'm not sure why the non M Sport cars don't have it, though. Maybe it's due to engine tuning? |

I replaced the stock with the following K&N performance filter. I have the MPPK M sport setup with the M2 air box and you can really hear the engine breathe. [IMG][/IMG]

BMW Performance Intakes come with K&N filters (even on MAF-based motors).

This is pure speculation but in some other BMW models the filter version with the additional layer is used when it is cold climate version and that layer is sometimes referred as the snow filter. My guess is that since m-sport has more direct air intake it requires this additional layer to ensure proper filtration.

The charcoal is not needed. You can run oil filters with MAF. Although there are plenty of dry filters now that are able to be cleaned and re-used.
