E90 Among LA County's Best Selling Cars - LA Business Journal (LABJ)

LABJ does not provide a link to this story on their web site for me to post unfortunately. Their latest issue of August 11, 2008 Ranks BMW 328 as no. 7 in the list of Best Selling Automobiles in Los Angeles County for 2007-2008 with 8582 unit sold (vs. 5223 units for 2006-2007).

It is interseting to see that BMW is no. 1 among non-Japanese car makers on this list (top spots are taken by the usual list - in order of ranking : Camry, Accord, Civic, Corolla, Prius and Altima). The next German/ Europen manufacturer is MBZ on the 14th spots for their C Class and no. 19th for their E Class. The highest ranking American automobiles are Chevy Silverado at no. 13th, Ford F Series at the 18th series and Chevy Tahoe at the 25th spots. No non-truck/ SUV car by an American manufacturer made it to the list.

This list reaffirms two things for me personally :

1. When I am out of town on business, standing at the car rental desk in some far away airport and the person helping me asks something like, "Buick LaCrosse OK with you?". I am correct in saying, "I have no idea what kind of car that is. Can you show me a photo or something?". I should not feel embarrassed about that and should not feel like an LA a**hole snob. I am creature of my habitat after all.

2. It is no longer a joke that even our gardeners and pool maintenance guys drive BMW's here in LA.

Ha ha, I guess people cant say that we buy a BMW in LA for the "name". It is simply the norm.

Well, I guess this only confirms what I have always thought, Western Europe have more style (not only in Clothing but also Cars) with BMW, Audi, MB, Volkswagen, Volvo and SAAB as the leading major brands.

Trucks or other poor handling-style obscure and large cars etc are only used as either utility cars or by hillbillies.

I don't understand what the OP is saying--there are only 8k E90's in LA, and in the 2nd largest city in the country, 8k cars are a lot? And I disagree, it's one thing to not know what a Buick Lacrosse is, but asking for a photo is being a snob. If it were me, I'd either take it to see what it is, or ask what else is available. We're all snobs in some way or another, but as the expression goes, it's nothing to write home to mother about.

Ouch ...!!!!! That was below the belt, Dude

Well, if you don't know whether Buick Lacrosse is a compact or a full size car, you better ask for a photo to see what you are paying for. I doubt if anyone behind the counter of a rental car place at the airport is willing to leave his/ her comfy chair and take me for a guided tour of their rental lot. Believe me, they prefer showing photos as they already have it like a laminated menu page sitting somewhere on their desk. Apparently, I am not the only one who asks "dumb" questions like that.

Not to worry though, if anyone is called a "snob" is me and not you since you know your American cars so well

It's no good to try and avoid it. Everyone is LA is a snob. I was snob when I lived there (lived in West LA for 12 years). I tried to pass it off as being "high-strung" or "particular" or "motivated." Uh, no, I was a snob. I've been back to Norcal for almost 5 years now and I think it's finally fading, but according to my wife, I still have snobbish tendencies.

We're all snobs to someone.....as it was once said by Bobby, one man gathers what another man spills. Imagine how I came across when I pulled in to my buddy's wedding in my sweet new 335 coupe, and told the valet I don't trust them with my new car? My wife (then fiance) was really embarassed. WTF was I thinking? There was a 760Li behind me and I was holding him up, a S63 AMG to my right, and I've got the attitude with a car that only costs 47k. LOL I still wont let valet park it, I just take my Nissan instead if I think there'll be valet parking.

I've had two trips to Europe in recent months, and from what I saw in Dublin, Paris, Nice and Monaco, most taxi drivers over there drive BMWs and Mercedes. TAXIS!

Just curious, do you happen to know the figures for the 335 and 323 for comparison?

No, I don't. The article only sites the number of new 328's sold. I have a feeling their number does not include 335's sold which although not as high as 328's, still could be substantial. I don't know about others but I see two 335's for every three 328's on the roads around my pasture (West LA) these days.

I am not sure what you mean by 323's. If I am not mistaken, 323's were not offered in 2007-2008 models. These figures were for new cars sold through dealers - not used ones or private sellers.

In California you are kinda required to have a BMW. It really is the norm over here.

That's not so bad. On Long Island, girls are required to have firm butts, and good hair, makeup, and nails, on top of the euro car requirement.

Buddy ...They come with our Bimmers as standard feature here in Cali. You mean you have to look for them as an after market add-on after getting yours there?
