n55 f30 walnut blast 2019
i have 77k miles saw my valves and they were covered with carbon buildup. especially in the corners. i am most likely getting walnut blast done this friday.
curious to see others experiance with this on n55's. now that f30s have been out for 7 years. |

After 70K should be a good time to do it and should help w/ rough idle.

I blasted my F33 valves at 80K miles and while there was definitely some buildup, I would not describe it as “bad” and perhaps not even worth doing. But I was doing other work at the time so I had the manifold off anyway so why not?

They greatly improved the oil catching at the valve cover / PCV which greatly reduces the oil into intake (and therefore reduces carbon buildup) but all direct injection cars (lacking fuel flow to clean the valves) experience this buildup to some degree.

my valves are no where near the pictures of the n54s i have seen. but i beleive mine could use a walnut blast. figuring since i do it at 78k and its there but not horribly bad, hopefully i wont have to do it again until 160k.
i did my oil changes religiously at 10k miles for two years. this last year its been every 5k miles. good oil, always use top tier 93. i got the car with 42,000 miles so i cant speak for what went on then, which also leads me to want to do walnut blast. thanks for pictures and replies! |

Yeah. N55 are pretty clean in comparison to an N54. Here's a before and after from a 135i that I did a walnut blast on:

I was curious about this since I'm at 77k and just got quoted $475 for the walnut blast. I'm thinking about taking that and going WMI since it will clean the valves and reduce IATs.

Hey thanks man. I'm really leaning towards the meth route but I'll let you know if I change my mind. I've never done a walnut blast myself. I'll need to research the steps.

Good reference there. Seems straight forward enough if you're patient and have the tools.

Just let me know. My meth kit is arriving tomorrow and I plan on doing a walnut blast on my car prior to installing the meth kit. That video pretty much nails everything you need to know. Only thing I do differently is, I use a short wire to bump the starter to open and close the valves. Quicker and easier than hand cranking it IMO.

You can buy a portable blaster from Harbor Freight for $30. If you already have a compressor and are able to remove the intake manifold, should be a fairly decent weekend job. Even a portable compressor is only about $100 and it's a good thing to have.
That said, the improvements at 77k miles for the N55 are likely not going to be as dramatic as they were for the N54 at around that mileage. I did my N54 5 series at around 75k and it made somewhat of a difference although not drastic. Before After |
