Notes on hitch installation for 328d wagon (F31)

I just finished putting the hitch on my car and I thought I would share some notes for anyone else considering this.

First, the car is a 2015 328d xDrive wagon with sportline
I installed the Curt 11367 hitch, I couldn't justify the extra spend for the hidden hitch and put the money towards a bike rack.
I followed the instructions from etrailer here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=axHyipp3DdI

I wanted to note a couple differences from the video that made the install a lot easier:
  • Ramps helped but were definitely not nessecary
  • Tail lights did not need to be removed, the bumper retaining nut was accessible
  • The torx screw on the wheel well was accessible without removing the liner
  • Did not need to remove the liner/mudguards on the underside
  • Heat shield did not need to be removed
  • Exhaust did not need to be removed or loosened (since the muffler isn't transverse)
  • When removing the bumper cover the PDC sensors need to be unplugged, two people is helpful
  • All of the electronics attached to the bumper bar do not need to be unplugged, you can loosen the bar, slide it off the studs and slide on the hitch without unplugging anything
  • Make sure to keep the key out of your pocket, ever time I swung the wrench near the sensor the hatch would open

Overall this was way easier than the eTrailer video for the 328 sedan, took a little less than an hour.

Have the same one and am happy with it, assuming it doesn't rip off when I go to use it for the first time

What are you planning to use yours for?

I'm only planning to use it for a hitch mounted tray bike rack at this point. I didn't want to deal with all the harness connections for towing so I'll use my Volvo for any towing. So far it hasn't fallen off!
