Importing Music from 2016 328i to 2020 M340i

I just picked up my new M340i this weekend and love the car. It's a new world coming from a 328i. I didn't think it would be that much of an upgrade but it really is.

I do have an issue and I can't find any information online. I pulled all my music (about 18gb worth) from the built-in hard drive and backed it up to a portable USB hard drive. I would like to import all of the music to my new car, but when I plug it in to the new car, it will not read the drive.

Looking at the files on my computer, it looks like the are in a proprietary "BR25" format. This seems to be a BMW exclusive format. You would think a new BMW could read files produced by an older BMW.

Anyone have any insight or any tips?

My new 330i is still 'At the Port' so I can't try it; but the problem may be your portable HD.

According to the online 'manual':

Quote:
Not compatible USB media:
‒ USB hard drives.
‒ USB hubs.
‒ USB memory card readers with multiple slots.
‒ HFS-formatted USB storage devices.
‒ Devices such as fans or lamps.
I'd try a non-HD USB stick instead.

You’re better off finding the original music files in MP3 and uploading it to the new car.

If I had all of the MP3 files, I wouldn't bother with any of this. The problem is I ripped pretty much all of my music from CD over the past 3 years. The new car doesn't have a CD player, so I can't do that again, which would be rather tedious anyway.

As you can imagine, it would be even more tedious to rip all the CDs again on a computer, convert them to MP3, and transfer to a compatible USB drive.

Looks like I might not have any choice, which is pretty disappointing. BMW should easily have anticipated someone moving from an older BMW to a newer model and wanting to take their music with them. As it is, the situation sucks.
