A week with the M340i

Hi all, new here and picked up an M340i last weekend. I turned in a 2016 340i, and while I've only driven the M340i for a week, it's a very different driving experience. It's taking some time to get used to it, but overall I'm happy.

My biggest frustration has been with BMW. Apparently there's some sort of ConnectedDrive outage, and my dealer can't 'activate' the car. Until he does, I can't register it in the ConnectedDrive app (and my car can't receive messages/verification code). Given all the promotion and advertising focusing on the tech of the car, this has been the biggest letdown. I'm very frustrated and no one seems to have answers. Emails to BMW have gone unanswered.

Anyway, happy to answer any questions as well, pics attached!

-Mike

Not usually a fan of black, but that looks very good!!!

What tint did you get?? I used Huper Optik on one of my cars, expensive but worth it...

I'm in the same boat with ConnectedDrive! Been over a month and still cannot get 3D viewing to work! Also , I'm now getting an "invalid ConnectedDrive login " error message on my iDrive display!

Congrats!!

This car looks a 💯 in black. Saw it in person and if not doing an individual color I would do black. Congrats!

Since you offered two questions... how do you like the interior trim? Do you find the auto start/stop annoying? Thx

Thanks!

So I simply got the supreme package at Tint World, but good to know about other options. Honestly, I didn't realize there as more premium tint services out there, but these guys have always done a great job on the last 3 cars I've brought to them over the years.

I'm going to reach out to my dealer on Tuesday...they need to escalate the ConnectedDrive BS. Have you tried contacting your dealer or BMW? I've got emails and Tweets I'm still waiting to hear back on.

So I had auto start/stop in my previous 340i, and I never liked it. I disabled it and never went back.

However, in the M340i - this has actually turned out to be an issue I'm dealing with. It seems that it decides when it wants to stay disabled, or re-enable, and I haven't figured out why. You'd think you press it once, and leave it alone, but that hasn't been the case in this car and that has been annoying.

I think the interior trim looks great and I like the overall quality. No complaints about the actual trim. Love the built-in lighting, but wish there were more color options (no red!?!).

That said, some of the interior functionally, I've struggled with a bit. Since I'm coming from the 2016 340i, it may just take some time to adjust to the many changes.

I think you now have to disable start/stop every time you start up the car but I've only been on test drives. It will be disabled automatically if you are in any sport modes.

So the next question would be can you set it up so it always start in Sports mode ... I know the answer is no for the Fxx cars but wondering if that changed in the G20 🤔

How does the driving compare to your 340i? Steering, suspension, power, exhaust, etc...

Phoned BMW last Monday. They mumbled something about migrating to a new platform for Connected Drive and should be done “in two days.” Still works in IOS app, though haven’t tried entering a new car.

I believe that the earlier F30s had a system similar to the G20 where you need to disable Start/Stop every time you start the car. Only way around it was with coding.

But on the LCI models (at least with my '16 340i), the car remembers the last setting and I don't think I had to code it to do that. It goes like this:

Eco Pro - Auto Start/Stop always on by default
Comfort - Remembers last setting
Sport/Sport+ - Remembers last setting (however Start/Stop is always disabled... the only difference is that with it turned on you get the start/stop not available message on the instrument cluster every time you come to a stop)

Hopefully we can code this to be off completely in the G20 as I don't want to make this a routine every time I use the car.

So going back to the auto/start stop question... Transfer is 💯. The car always starts up in Comfort mode, and in that mode, the auto/start stop is enabled. When you switch to Sport mode, it is automatically disabled.

psuibmw As for saving the mode for when you start up - not a chance. Just like my previous 340i, it won't start up in Sport mode. 👎🏼

BMW435 On my 2016 340i (non-LCI), it was just a button above the ignition button. It never changed unless pressed. At least, that's what it seemed like. After 3 years of instantly switching to Sport Mode when I turned on the car, I never saw it change unless I accidentally pressed it.

I picked up my car a week ago this past Saturday, and my dealer had told me they expected it up and running on Monday... It has now been a week. 😡

I expect BMW to get back to my emails and Tweets early this week, now that the holiday weekend is over. If I get any new info, will share here.

NYC_340i Unfortunately, the weather hasn't been that great here in the Bay Area over the last week - alot of rain. That said, haven't pushed it too hard in the weather and while in the break in period. A few things though...
  • It drives much, much heavier than my 2016 340i. The previous 340i felt lightweight compared to this car.
  • The steering feels like more effort - it's just, 'tighter,' if that's the right word. I drove my X3 over the weekend and even its steering feels more effortless.
  • I absolutely love the power, but haven't pushed it too hard. It's a beast.
  • Exhaust bubbles a bit when slowing down, haven't noticed it much when accelerating, yet. I don't ever recall hearing any sort of bubbles in my 2016.

In my opinion, I think it's a very, very different drive compared than the 2016. I just don't think there's any similarities at all.

Oh boy on the dealer side of things its a real big issue with CD being down
It was supposed to be a 2 day outage on I believe to be about the 14th. And it just keeps going....and going....and going. Some days we can submit BMW assist forms, others we cant. Sometimes the phone app works for customers others it just gets stuck in a loop of sending command.
I can go on and on, all the customer complaints come to us and I try to get an update from connected drive and all I get every time is, we know of the issue, no expected fix date.
I probably need to keep this quiet lol.
You gotta take the good with the bad, but I get annoyed when the bad hits the customers.
