*Video* F31 N47 diesel bad air box rattle
I know this is probably covered somewhere else on the forums, if you're here to mention that kindly don't comment and leave.
Seems to be coming from the upper left mount on the airbox and is very loud. Sound goes away when I pop the box off the mount about half way or put pressure on it. Any solid advice on removing it, or is it resolved by replacing the rubber? (Which mine looks like new anyways) Last edited by 328iX; 07-18-2020 at 02:07 PM.. |

maybe remove the top part of the box and compare the clips? one may have been bent a little more "open" and is not as secure as the others. could also be the lower half of the box where it mounts. I would uninstall and re-install the box to make sure everything is in and secured properly.

The air filter box connects to a "tube" on the left side. There is plastic on plastic and make noise!
You will have to remove it and put some tape there. The part in the red cicle from pic 1 connects to part with number 9 from pic 2. And the number 9 connects to 10 (pic 2). All plastic on plastic |

I don't know why they couldn't have made 2 separate pieces of the air box cover so we can remove the cover with ease like every other car in the world.

Exactly! Very stupid design. Dumbest designed air box I ever had.

But removing the air filter box you will be able to replicate by hand. With the right tools it should not take you more than 30 minutes |

I sold the car a year ago but I believe I insulated the loose plastics around the air box with tape.
I'm unsure if the sound came through into the cabin but you can always check by laying your hand on the airbox and seeing if the noise goes away

Had the same issue on my F30 320d. I applied some felt on part 9 seen in Tavicu's second photo but without too much success.
However, when dismantling the airbox I noticed that the grommet labeled 5 in Tavicu's first photo was out of the metallic hole (labeled 7) in which it should have sat and instead was on the pin of the airbox. I removed the grommet from the pin, placed it in the metallic hole (this might be tricky if done in cold weather since the plastic grommet can be less malleable) and then reinstalled the airbox. Since then, all is quiet. My guess is that the last mechanic that changed the airfilter didn't notice / didn't care that the grommet had come off of its holder. If you're having a hard time inserting the grommet in the metallic hole try aligning the grommet's groove to the metalilic hole (#7), insert a screwdriver into the grommet and pull it inwards into the metallic hole. |
