Unstable Idle

every now and then seems to rev higher than normal for no apparent reason, is it normal?

Mine does this about 20 seconds after turning it on, it then settles back down. Is this what you are talking about?

As what you are saying mate, but on afew occasions mine has done the same when engine is warm

Yes, happens to me as well. Seems it happens when it thinks the cats are not warm enough.

Happens as well when I start the car and start driving right away. Then, if I come to a stop shortly after, the idle goes back up for about 10 secs.

It's fast heating the Cats Nick, nothing to worry about.
Mine does it a lot when starting, i just drive off and it's down again in a minute or so.
