Brakes are Sqeaking, what do I need to do?

I recently purchased a 2015 BMW 328xi (F30) and the brakes are squeaky when going slow. I'm not sure if I need to replace both the rotors and the brake pads or if I just need the brake pads.

I have attached some images below that will hopefully help you understanding my situation. If you need better pictures please message me or reply to this thread and I can supply some more specific ones too.

My vehicle has 43,000 miles btw so I'm assuming these are still the original brakes.

The car also has the upgraded "M-Sport" calibers. not sure if that makes a difference tho on what brake pads I would need to put in.

Thank you!

I see new pads in your future. Those are toast.

If the rotors are glazed, replacing rotors and brakes at the same time is recommended.

Rotors are not expensive.

Visit https://www.turnermotorsport.com to research rotor and brake pads options.

Do you think it would be smartest for me to just replace the pads for now then once the rotors ware then replace those later on? Or does it also look like the rotors are toast. I'm not too knowledgeable on this topic haha.

Thank you very much for your reply

For daily driving, regular rotors (no drilled holes, no slots, no dimples) are just fine. No need to spend extra money.

If you do want to consider better brakes, M Performance (OEM BMW aftermarket brakes) brake kit can be installed but at a higher price.

I was always curious on what the drilled holes and whatnot meant so thank you for that! And yeah I just use it for regular daily driving nothing too special.

For a rotor, if they are scored or if they wobble they will have to be turned. There is a minimum thickness. If turning the rotors gets them too thin, they are not safe and must be replaced.
Your rotors may be ok, the only way to know for sure is to measure the thickness and the runout and the depth of the scores. If there is a doubt, throw them away and get new ones. They are fairly cheap and it's not worth the gamble.

The origin of drilled rotors dates back to 1960's ...

Excellent article to read with lots of technical details: https://www.good-guys.com/hotnews/te...-brake-rotors/

In short - for daily driving, drilled rotors do not offer measurable benefits.

Those rotors look fine. I don't even see a rust ridge on the outer edges.

Yeah the brakes don't feel bad or anything it's just the noise is horrible from the grinding from the brake pads so I think i'm just going to replace the pads for now. Thanks man!

The grinding is probably because the leading and trailing edges of the pads are supposed to be tapered. Yours aren't, the entire taper is worn away. I'm surprised you haven't had a sensor trip already.

I just DIY'd my front brakes.
Pelican Parts was my source for parts.
Has been for years.
I've got rear brakes being shipped and expect to install them this weekend.

Rotors cost like $55 - $60
That's why I always replace them and never let some toothless idiot turn them.

Don't forget to learn where to put BMW brake spooge (quieter) on the calipers - not on the brake pads themselves. There is a right answer.

I have a 2014 335i M-Sport, with the M-Performance breaks. Mine squeak too before they warm up. Especially if its cold out. I spoke to BMW about it and they couldn't find anything wrong with the pads or rotors.

The pads are greased wherever they make metal to metal contact with the calipers or pad carriers, otherwise they can squeak. Brake grease is high temperature, so it won't thin and spread to the pad or rotor surfaces. Obviously you don't want to glob it on, a thin coating will do.

Did you buy it CPO or just second hand? If CPO and you "just" bought it - those pads should have been replaced at sale. At 43k miles it's probably safe to assume you need pads and rotors.

Get some rotors that are plated or coated to avoid the rust

Those rotors are in great condition. Replacing them would be asinine. Confirm thickness is above minimum and install pads only. Akebono's are my favorite.
