Damn Rocks!

On the parkway today in the 340 and a tiny rock hits the windshield and does this. Only 6k miles on the car too, what a shame.

Going to try and get OEM replacement glass but Geico says I have to pay the difference in cost from Safelite aftermarket glass to OEM! What a racket!

Wonder if there's any quality difference or it doesn't matter....

Safelite glass is horrible too. I had them replace my windshield on my previous car and the glass quality was garbage. It was hit with the tiniest of stone while doing 35 and it cracked it.

Do you have HUD? Wonder if it has to be OEM if you do.

That's in your contract that you agreed to and signed. In my limited insurance experience, Liberty mutual is the only insurance provider that uses factory glass. That was a few years ago.

I'll never use them again. You can see waves in the glass like every 1-2" or so, very annoying and distracting.

I will say that my oem glass has held up to many loud/large rocks hitting it on the freeway and being fine.

New VW glass must come from safelite, as a little tiny baby rock barely hit the glass on the freeway and caused a star crack.

Safelite is shit....I'll never use them again. I got a rock to my windshield in my 17 IS350 and used them to fill the crack. They did a terrible job.

OMG, I agree. Need to get some quality glass put in my 440i, My wife picked up 2 more small chips from tiny rocks she didn't even hear driving down to Maryland to meet me today. I think the BMW glass must be super soft, or super hard to chip as much as it does with small impacts.

Had the same problem on my F32 when I drove it back from LA to SF. It went from a size of a dime to a 10 inch crack after 300 miles.

Replaced it with oem windshield, $1400 on invoice...

Well now I'm nervous...shit.

The difference out of pocket is $430 bucks. I don't know if it's worth it lol. If the glass is that shitty something else may just happen to the new windshield...

No they don't; Liberty Mutual pays for SafeLite not OEM also.. I just had the pleasure dealing with them, pushing back on forth on an OEM glass. All insurance companies try to save a buck and give you the same BS.

Did you get them to cover OEM or they shafted you too?

They kept insisting that they would send SafeLite and they'll use an OEM glass but it was aftermarket when the installer arrived.

It was stepdad's 2017 Acura and he was going to trade it in soon, so I didn't push it hard and let them do it because he didn't understand the difference between both. I'm guessing most people don't.

If it was my car, I would of tried harder but they very sneaky and pushy with their contract agreement with Satellite.

Drive slower in areas where loose rocks are likely, avoid being behind semis or trucks in general if you can, don't tail gate. General rules I follow just to try to reduce any incidents like this occurring. I'm not saying OP did any of these, flukes happen. It just reduces chances

Literally was on a parkway driving 5 car lengths behind a passenger car. Just got unlucky....I try to follow the same things you mentioned above as well.

So I called Geico back and gave them my spiel...Got them to agree to a 1 time exception to replace the windshield with OEM BMW glass. Lets see what happens when the installer arrives tomorrow

I've been driving since I'm 17 and I'm 29 now. I've owned Acura's mainly and an Infiniti before the BMW, all roughly 10-15k miles per year.

In addition to my personal mileage, close to another 200k miles the 5 years I worked as an account rep driving various domestic SUVs.

This is the first time I've ever had glass chip/crack on a car.

I’m similar. With Safeco I pay $35 a year for OEM parts coverage for all of our vehicles combined, and that extends to windshields.

OP, I have literally an identical crack on my windshield, so much so that the picture could be from my car except on the passenger side. I just got a windshield repair kit and plugged the crack. It has been over 6 months and I have had no issues. I was half expecting the crack to lengthen over winter, but luckily nothing changed.
