The sunroof doesn't seem to open as far as it should
We got our red 330i, on April 3, a factory order, built in Munich. The wife opened the sunroof for the first time a couple of days ago, and it stopped 8 1/2 inches away from the back edge of the hole in the roof.
Did the whole owner's manual thing with initializing twice, and all functions appear to be going right except it just doesn't open all the way or even close to it. Could a fellow G20 owner open their sunroof and let me know how far away the front edge of the glass is from the back edge of the hole in the roof when fully open? The easy way to do this is to view this from outside of the car. Thank you! Best always, Bluemill |

If it's the same as an F30 (which I imagine it is), the sunroof doesn't open completely with one touch. You have to use the button to make it go all the way back.

I haven't tried the sunroof on the G20 yet, but that's how it is on the G05 X5 too. You have to open the last quarter or so manually.

Mii's response is the second confirmation narrowly opening roof.
First, thanks Mii for doing that check for me, much obliged!
That 8.5 " of glass not retracted is 37%, or over a third of the total width of the sunroof. I can't believe the BMW engineers let this one get by them, it's just not the way they do things. If anything they tend to over engineer things, not drop the ball like this. The width of the glass is 22.8," and the roof behind the hole is 28.34," more than 5 1/2 " extra to allow for some machinery, wiring etc. I would think that they could get this thing to open at least another 4 inches. I have to believe it's a programming issue, not a space problem. Best always, Bluemill |

id be interested to know the actual reasoning, but would assume it opens to that level because any further may increase wind buffeting by a fair amount which is the case with many panoramic roofs

I noticed this to. The manual tells that on some cars there is an in between stop to prevent air noice and such. Could be overridden by sliding the button up once more.
Tested today but that doesn't work. I think the roof decline prevents the window from going more back...

Yeah, I am observing the sunroof unable to retract fully as well.
You really have to read these press releases like a lawyer. Sure, they bragged about the sunroof being larger which isn't a lie, but also didn't mention that caveat that it doesn't open fully anymore |

Well, one thing for sure, this is one feature that I won't be using too often. Too bad sunroof delete was not an option.

The reason the sunroof likely won’t open much further is because the ATM (Advanced Telematics Module) is mounted under the roof shark fin antenna, preventing further movement.
It’s a bit of a shame though, since the glass is larger than the outgoing F30, but opens up less. Least it allows more light in the cabin! |

Tim, are you sure of this or speculating?
There is a lot of real estate behind that hole in the roof. Yes, there is a lot going on with the powered shade, whole module thing to do the litany of actions, but still plenty of room there.
I'd much rather delete the shade motor and have a sun roof that opens acceptably. My wife and I love BMWs, but she is of a mind to dump the car in a year or so over this oversight. Quote, "It just looks STUPID!" I still think the module is in need of reprogramming. That's my only hope at this point.... Best always, Bluemill |

I just got the car a week ago and noticed mine has an issue with the one click auto close function of the sunroof. For whatever the reason is, the sunroof cannot be fully closed and bounces back right before it comes to full closure, and it just reverses to being fully open position. Strangely, this seems to ONLY happen if I open it fully prior. If I open tiled or only open a portion of the sunroof, the auto closing does work. Its kind of a frustrating process as I already had it reset by the bmw dealership twice now, once upon receiving car and the salesperson helped me to reset after I noticed the problem already, and the second time by another technician at the dealership.
My previous X1 had zero mechanical problem for couple years I had it and very surprised this kind of thing can happen, maybe a QC problem due to it being the first batch of cars? If anyone else experiences similar problem, then it could be a more serious faulty problem. I'm hoping to go back to the dealer again tomorrow and demand a fix for this. |

Another reconciliation factor for the G20 sunroof...
I have accepted the quirky sunroof issue at this point, but my wife, it's her car, is still annoyed.
I went to my BMW Center last Saturday and talked to two accommodating young techs that allowed me to measure the clear opening of an F30, the previous generation car that we had just traded in. I did this as a comparison to our '19. The measurement was exactly 12," with about 2 inches of unretracted glass. This is identical to the clear opening of our new car, although it's got 8 1/2 inches of unretracted glass. I went back to her with my positive spin points: 1) The sunroof opens just as much as our last car; 2) The new car has a cool new powered sunshade that blends smoothly into the opening sequence; 3) On the E46 and F30 we had to pay $1,050 for the sunroof (She's FRUGAL so that's the only one that had traction!); and 4) The new roof has a nice big hunk glass that makes the cabin look roomier, especially when closed which is probably 97% of the time. She says, "I don't care it just looks stupid, like an obvious mistake. We'll keep the car a year and look at the Audis again." It will be interesting to see if BMW does anything on this one. I'm still hanging in with BMW. Best always, Bluemill |

Have the same issue with my sunroof. Definitely surprised that it doesn't open any further. Having a larger sunroof that doesn't open up further is misleading. However, it does allow a lot of light into the cabin which i am enjoying

Sorry, no solution. That’s the way it was designed. It’s a stupid design.
