Please Tell Me Your Opinions of Your B58 Engine?

Please tell me your opinions of your B58 engine? I understand the N55 well, but I know almost nothing about the B58.

Are there any common reliability problems such as the N55 plastic charge pipe that fails? One member sent me the message below. Have others experienced these issues?

"Some people have had B58 coolant loss issues. BMW appears to have changed the B58 turbocharger part number (based on my searching realOEM.com) sometime in 2018 so hopefully that helps with the problem (if the coolant loss is from the turbo, some have hypothesized a faulty radiator cap is to blame)."

I saw a recent announcement that BootMod3 for the B58 is being released. Has anyone beta tested it on their car? I'm wondering what the improvement may be in Stage1 93 Octane? What are the B58 hardware upgrade requirements to use a BM3 Stage2 93 Octane tune?

Any opinions are appreciated. Thanks in advance!

So I'm sure you know this, but in case not, hop over to the F30 B58 section to glean much information in terms of all things B58

I have had it for over 10,000 miles and it's still very smooth and linear. But, I have no tunes or piggybacks on my engine. I prefer to keep it stock.

Thanks for the feedback! If you ever decide to tune, I highly recommend the BootMod3 Stage1 flash tune. It doesn't require that you do any other mods. The BMW MPPK tune came with my car when I bought it used and the BootMod3 tune flashes over it. (The MPPK gets reinstalled in 5 minutes for dealer service visits.) The BootMod3 Stage1 tune is so much better than the MPPK tune at a fraction of the BMW price.

BootMod3 installs by just sitting in the car in your driveway or garage with your laptop plugged into the OBD2 port near your left knee. You never even open the hood. It took me about 20 minutes the first time only because I was going extremely slow out of caution. It literally takes five minutes to flash back to your stock tune to take it for any dealer service. The Stage1 tune really enhances the driving. People assume that it is just more power, and it is. But it also makes the gas pedal more responsive as you switch from comfort to sport to sport+. Feels like a new car. Have fun!
P.S. If you ever want the best price on BM3 including a free cable, so you don't have to buy it separately on the Internet, call Mike at Extreme Power House (X-PH). Mike is a great resource. Best prices and extremely knowledgeable too!

I will check it out, but are there any DYNO's which show the typical gains with the mod for the B58?

BootMod3 for N58 engine was just out recently so dyno info is probably in hands of beta testers users and certainly with manufacturer. Contact their support on their website. They have been responsive.

+1 for proTUNING Freaks Bootmod3 , only platform that supports all software versions and doesn't flash your car with a random version

There's various Dynos out there you can see from their instagram page and FB Bm3 group.

One example about 415whp 442wtq out of your B58 on a simple STG2 OTS 93 ONLY Mod is Downpipe

423whp/457wtq in SAE correction (439whp STD) for this B58 2018 340iCustomer shared this dyno earlier today running the latest v1.6 Stage 2 93 octane (98RON for those in Europe) OTS map. Peak power at just around 16psi. Mods: downpipe and intake. Flash and go in 3mins, switch maps in 19seconds, doesn’t get any easier to get started

So how does that work exactly. You flash back to stock , go to dealer for firmware /software update, then just flash back to your tuned file? Is the tune independent from your vehicles software vers. Or do we wait until Bm3 uploads the most current software vers of your tune to their cloud service.

Curious what dyno says for a BMW N58 BootMod3 Stage1? How much is the improvement over baseline?
Also curious about the same Stage1 but for an N55 engine, and it's improvement over baseline.

Stock engine map is definitely the least powerful but the delivery is so smooth. The engine is amazing

B58 in the G20 is a different motor from the F30.

F30 has B58B30M0
G20 has B58B30O1

Quite a few differences including higher pressure fuel injection, new cylinder head, new crank, thicker walled block, new cooling system, etc...

m140i and 340i have the same b30m0 variant.

are they identical except for the tune?

is a tuning box interchangable between the two?

Yes just go back to stock before going into the dealer and If you have a major failure they will find the car flashed regardless. BMW called me and told me that my car had been flashed 57 times

Did you lock the DME? lol
The counter flash moves even when you code the car so they weren't sure if it was flashes or coding
