2011 328xi 80K miles 6MT

The engine recently started making a new whining sound, like a med-high pitched whrrl. It is definitely correlated with engine RPMs, not speed, transmission state, etc. A belt? other ideas? should I try to hunt it done or leave it be?

Did you use a non oem oil filter? I just had a whine that changed with rpms. Video would be best though...

I'll try to record... yes probably a non-OEM oil filter, put in maybe 4 months ago. This new sound started maybe a week ago.

Could be related to the serpentine belt components (belt and pulleys)

ok, recorded the sounds. I hope it is clear enough...

the sound gets more pronounced (or different) if I engage the heating fan.

no it doesn't... the sound is subtle to be sure, but definitely a change from a month ago...

and it is much more prominent when I turn on the heater/fan.

while it is strongly correlated to engine RPM (higher RPM, the louder and higher pitch it is), there is a tiny bit of lag relative to the actual engine.

It is most noticed at the end of the first recording...

To me that sounds like a belt or pulley. 80k miles is about the time you'd expect to hear those noises.
