2006 e90 versus 2005 e46, which is more reliable??

I have a question about reliabilty...I traded in my 2005 325i e46 this past weekend for a 2006 330i e90. My hope is that I will have better luck with the newer 2006 e90 edition. Without going into details I definitely feel my 2005 e46 was a lemon. Everyone with a 2006 please let me know how your car is holding up and if you know of any common issues to watch out for, thanks for you time....

My E46 2005 has been excellent for 50000 miles (tie-rods under warranty). My E90 2007 spent 2 full weeks in the shop and has to return, because of random heated seats activation.

So far I really like my 06 330i Premium/Sport.

I bought it back in April as a CPO with 27K on the odometer.

The only thing I have really had any issue with is the lack of all of the settings that the owners Manual states it has such as User Programable DTRL, Auto Locks, etc...

I guess they are stating that the only way to set those is through Progman at the dealer since it is an earlier relese 2006.

I wonder if they put a newer ECU on the car if it would have those options?

I have the Titanium Silver with Gray Dakota Leather and Aluminium Trim and really enjoy the performance as well as its great looks!

I hope that you enjoy yours as well as I do.

I have a 325i. I only had two problems with the car.
1. oxygen sensor broke. (almost all cars do now a days)
2. car door problems.

Other than that I love driving the machine.

I had a 2003 330i (same as your 2005) and a 2006 330i and the 2006 was far more reliable.

I had no problems at all in the two years I owned the 2006. In the same two years with the 2003 I had seven (yes seven!) window regulators replaced, various electronic modules went out, sun roof cassette, ignition coils went out on a road trip, and front control arm bushings were bad when I traded it in (causing steering wheel wobble).

I have an '06 E90 330i that I bought with 9,500 miles. Now has just under 21k miles, no significant issues during that time at all, knock on wood.

If the car was built before 09/05 it does not have the system that allows for setting those items through the car... it was just one of the first run changes BMW did and agitated many early adopters.

So far knock on wood, the only problem was the passenger side airbag sensor in the seat that had to be replaced.

My e46 was fairly reliable though so I cant complain to much about that, except for the damn window regulators.

So would a new ECU make that possible or does it go deeper than that?

If my memory serves me correct it goes deeper than that, including a change to the instrument cluster and wiring.

Conventional wisdom is that the last model yr of the cycle should be quite reliable, while the 1st year of the new model could be problematic. You should look into consumer report for this kind of data.

73k miles on my 06 e90 (pre-sept build). a little stuff here and there, but nothing major. my recent aggrivations have been with the rear break sensor, and the sunroof was acting crazy for about two weeks by not wanting to close on the 1st try.

Mapezzul, you are correct... If memory serves me correctly, didn't they go from the MOST BUS to a CAN BUS system?

Interesting, I didnt get the Daytime running lights option in the most recent update, but with the most up to date software I did get a bunch of other options I didnt have before, like the stopped car ventilation and I can control my auto locks.
