I've had a tire plugged on each of my past two BMW's and had no issues. The last one was a screw between the tread on a three month old PS4S which will dampen one's day. If a reputable shop did the repair, watch it for a couple of days and relax.

As long as the hole was in a spot that was repairable, then a patch will hold fine. I've done a parking lot plug job that lasted the life of the tire. So I'm not sure one method is better than another if done correctly. And I would never try to repair a hole in the sidewall. That's new tire time.
