dB level on stock exhaust with AA mid pipe? (Needed for track access)

Hi All,

I am due to have my AA mid pipe fitted on 17th April and as I will be using my car on track I am keen to try and find out the static and drive by dB levels of the M2C with this set up. Has anyone done this already on their car? If not, if someone would be so kind as to measure these levels if they are at a loose end I would really appreciate it. I would like to find out the levels in Efficient and Sport+.

At the Bedford Autodrome (my local circuit) I'll need to meet the 101 dB static and 87.5 dB drive by limit. Fingers crossed this setup with AA mid pipe doesn't take me over these levels otherwise I am screwed!

Can someone explain at what point in the rev range do the valves open in Efficient mode or will they stay closed throughout the rev range?

Cheers,

Karl

If you have the car in efficient for the tests it will pass no problems.

I honestly think it will pass in Sport mode as well. The AA midpipe is only like 15% louder than stock...if that...big if.

Yeah, it should be fine.

15% is better than the current state of affairs!! 😫

You should be fine with valves closed.

Other notes:
Cold start with valves open is LOUD. Get the BimmerLink app and you'll enjoy opening the valves the second you leave your neighborhood.

I'm really amazed how much dynamic range is available with this midpipe and the stock axle back. I think the exhaust is more than 15% louder with valves open and a fraction of that with valves closed.

Very nice build quality as always from AA.

Thanks for the response.

I'll take a look in to the Bimmerlink app, but it's not a huge issue as I'm in a fairly rural area with only a couple of neighbours, one who used to race Mk2 escorts 😎

I can't wait to get this fitted. From the many videos I've seen on Bimmerpost of people who have the same set up I really like the sound and look of it 👌🏻

Does bimmerlink keep the exhaust valves open 100% of the time? I know the mapping closes the exhaust valves at various gears/rpm.
Also do you have to keep the app open to keep the valves open?

You have to manually open them every time you start the car sadly - you need actual hardware to force open always.

Definitely agree. I'm using a VSC-2 to keep the valves open most of the time, but I do have the option to close them and keep it quiet.

OP, you might want to look into that. For $200, you could force the valves closed even in Sport+ and you'd have no problems passing the dB meter.

Where do you purchase the brace? I feel this brace should come with the midpipe.

Last week I unplugged both valves and they are permently open. I turned off asd as well. Now I can now actually hear turbo spool and exhaust sounds from the car. Really liking the car without asd. Was getting annoyed by it on the highway.

I thought this was an optional piece? I have seen youtube videos of people putting washers (spacers) under their original brace for more clearance with their AA midpipe which did not come with a separate brace.

Is this a recent change and now included with AA midpipe purchases??

Nice. I have an ASD bypass on its way from the US. Looking forward to installing this and having the sounds of the AA mid pipe also.

Yes; I turned off ASD with ~100 miles on the car I think? Terrible.

It's definitely not optional and included with the M2C midpipe. I can't speak to what AA used to do with the F80/82.

The stock configuration presents a conundrum. With ASD off it really is hard to hear the engine and shift accordingly, and ASD on is annoying and sounds fake. Now with the AA midpipe and ASD off, there is plenty of sound and vibration with valves open.

I think ASD sound's perfect. Really do. I'm not sure how you it can be annoying on the highway? I love it, 60-100 mph sounds great, gruff and mechanical and instant tone change ike a proper old skool NA 3.0

This is the closest thing to older I6 NA engines I've had. Friend's have commented how awesome it sounds when out on a run.

Makes the car, as it's a turbo it will never sound 'proper' without it.

I just do not like fake sound into the cabin. I can actually hear the engine now with ASD off and exhaust valves permanently open. With ASD on I could not. I can hear the engine, turbo spool, and exhaust now especially with the windows down. Before with ASD on driving on the highway it was starting be bothersome in sport + mode almost to the point there was it started to sound like a exhaust 'drone'. After I turned off ASD, it was a bit of a shocker at first, but after 1-2 days driving I am keeping ASD off.

Piping synthetic sound into the cabin is never encouraged in my book. Really need to get a mid pipe now. ASD off with midpipe would be the best scenario. My cold start with valves permanently open are LOUD. I cannot imagine what cold start will sound like with the mid pipe. Good thing this is not my daily as my neighbors wont get too annoyed.

All my extra money is going into my other car at the moment.
