What is the obsession of these ultra low profile wheel/tire setup?

Not so much on the F90 M5’s but, as an example the M3/4 competition package...you hit a pothole with those 20’s and you can trash both the tire and wheel(s). If they were that significantly better at handling, wouldn’t F1 cars have the same?

F1 is artificially mandated for competition.

Tire/wheel warranty is must for those cars.

Stop those spooky stories... just scaring me from going with 20 inch wheels on the M5. On the other hand... I hope the forged ones on the M5C will hold up better because they are lighter and stronger.

20” on the M5 is fine. 275 X .35 gives you a side wall of 96.25 mm which is okay. Rears are even better with 285 x .35 99.75mm.
It’s not necessarily the diameter of the wheel but the sidewall of the tire.

If you're tracking the car yes I wouldn't on a small tire big wheel setup. But for street why not. our roads in south Florida are not that bad.

I agree but in the NY/CT/NJ area no matter how many taxes they impose and no matter how high they are, our roads are worse then third world countries. For me it’s a natural instinct to scan the roads for potholes just like speeders scan the roads for cops. My neighbor has a 911 and blew out both wheel and tires on the passenger side from the same pothole. Even if you have wheel/tire insurance it’s just a major inconvenience especially with cars like M3/4s that don’t have run flats or a spare tire. But BMW does provide a sealent and compressor which will work unless the tire is blown out.
