OMG Alberta!!!!!!! So much salt on the road

Can't stand this town.

Shitload of salt all over the place with semi-melted snow. Makes me puke and my car makes rattling noise from all those unmelted salt hitting on the car.

Should I be worried about rusting or is BMW strong enough to endure this kind of harsh environment? Also, what should I do about car wash? Just self car wash? (Do I just spray water underbody of the car?) or touchless car wash?

Thanks in advance!

Move to Oregon. We dont apply salt on roads here. We let people crash into each other on icy roads 😅

You can do touchless underbody wash. I did that twice after trip to the mountains

I don't get why no one still use sand. Safe and still works great.

I hate when they sand/salt the roads both damage vehicles and ate overdone. I recall many winter's where the sand/salt was so overdone it was causing issues not the little snow we ended up getting.

It’s a mess. PA is just as bad. My X5 is detailed and waiting until the salt and cinders gets off the roads. Won’t be long. My advise is to regularly spray up under your car and fender wells. You won’t have any rust issues with how good today’s vehicles are galvanized and use of aluminum. My wife’s Audi A4 is her everyday car and sits outside and never a rust issue. It killed me to drive my brand new 50i through 3 snow states going south on vacation. Its Carbon Black sides were all white for the entire 10 day trip.

It is a disease in the United States. Especially in Northern regions.

It is another scam someone needs to expose. The money wasted and paid to contractors is unbelievable. It is literally dollars falling from the sky each time it snows.
Some of colleagues i have who plow - describe it as Mafia with territories divided and multiple passes over the same already clean area being encouraged.

The damage it does to the environment, cars, dogs, shoes and the local budgets is huge.

All of it for the fear of grandma with summer tires not able to leave the house.

Put it this way. I have to really try hard to catch snow covered roads in Boston to justify snow tires. Otherwise i drive on chemicals. Parking is ridiculous. You get bombarded with salt and have to cover wheels to protect brakes.

And to top it off is the cars in front of you throwing cinders back and chipping up your front, hood, and windshield. It’s unavoidable if you live in the city other than to not drive the car on the bad days. It’s why we in the northeast put all our toys away for the winter months if you care about them and own “beater cars”.

Yeah, not to mention how destroyed the roads get which means summer is all repairs ie people standing around creating traffic. I don't miss living on the east coast whether it was Boston (wife is from the area) or Pennsylvania, both places while beautiful lose their appeal in the winter months.

Exactly, hell I've had plows slide and nearly kill me a few times up by you. I used to worry more about cars than the stuff they'd throw at me while driving. Central PA gets fairly bad with the out of state or international students driving. I once saw a guy drive a brand new 5 series off the lot and proceed to wrap it around a phone pole less than a mile later...

When I lived in Alberta I was more worried about all the gravel they spread when it was too cold for salt to work. Talk about rock chips and cracked windshields. I was amazed how many messed up windshields I saw.

For some reason they can figure out how to screen out the 1" crushed rock in Alberta. It pisses me off the sh*t they dump on the roads every time it snows.

Touchless (brushless) car washes that feature an under carriage spray will help. I frequently use in the NE to remove road salt and other grime.

And most of the crap they put on the roads ends up in the creeks and rivers. Pretty sad.

Flew into my office in Calgary. I laughed as I was thinking about this thread. I get it. There must be an abundance of rock and sand. You guys should really PPF your X5's.
