Do you have a case on it?

Wireless charging will always result in wild heat because it's less efficient than wired, if you have a case it will be even more inefficient at cooling (and charging).

Unfortunately, several people have reported this issue. On long road trips, my iPhone X running google maps on CarPlay overheats and either disconnects or shuts down once every 1-2 hours. I have to take it off the charging pad and hold it in front of the AC vent to cool it off. This is without a phone case.

It's too bad BMW didn't run a small AC duct to the confined space to give it some ventilation. Don't know how it can be fixed now.

I'd switch to a charging cable. Repeated overheating surely can't be good for your phone.

Mine gets warm, wouldn't say hot though.
I just drove 500 miles, with the phone on the charging pad, and carplay with Waze active the whole time.

What phone do you have? There's no way I can drive 500 miles (not even 100) before my iPhone gets so hot that it shuts down.

Sounds like an Apple issue. None of my Samsung phones have gotten hot like that even when its 110F + outside. I'll test with my work iPhone and see if it gets hot

I dont have an X5 but I use my Samsung S9 with a fast charge wireless charger (https://www.bestbuy.com/site/samsung...?skuId=4363702) all the time and never had any heating issues.

Is the wireless charging heating issue isolated to iOS devices that have a case?

I think it's all iOS phones as a whole. I still need to test it with my work iPhone

My iPhone X overheats whether or not I have the case on. I think its confined space location with no ventilation contributes to the issue.

No, I have a thin plastic case. It's definitely a BMW or BMW/iPhone issue, because it never overheats on the wireless charger in the house. As someone else noted, there is probably insufficient ventilation in the center console that contributes to the issue.

Do you keep the center console closed when charging? Mine was open during that 500mile trip.
I could see the poor ventilation playing a role in the overheating. But it sounds like there's more going on.

I have left my Galaxy Note 8 on the charging tray for a 2200 mile trip the entire time. That’s a long time of constant charging and my phone wasn’t hot when we stopped for a quick fuel/food break. Console always open. This has to be a Apple issue.

unlikely, none of my Android phones veer get hot charging in there. I should also mentioned I'm using a Speck Presidio Grip case 90% of the time

No -- if the phone is on the charging pad, the console is open. Mainly because if the phone slides around, it stops charging from time to time, so I have to kind of nudge it back to a spot where the charging starts again.

Candidly, I think it's largely my phone (although obviously I'm not the only one who experiences this overheating issue). I have an iPhone 5SE, which is essentially an iPhone 6 in the body of an iPhone 5. The iPhone 6 doesn't support wireless charging, but I've added a wireless charging adapter to it that works fine with the wireless charger in my home. The dealer suggested that the frequent phone and Carplay drops/reconnects I'm experiencing are likely due to the fact that its an older version phone. I've been thinking about upgrading anyway, so I will probably just do that and see how that affects the issue. If there's no change, then it's back to the dealer.
