No? It's an ugly front engine Volkswagen with low power.

Great track cars!!! I have a couple friends that drive them... I drove a 944s2 for a summer, it was a great car...

That being said I wouldn't go over $500-800 on that car... it has low miles but it's gonna need a lot of rust repair.

I should also add to the OP, that unless you really want to dive deep into a big DIY or money pit or you are really set on a 944 look elsewhere for a project.

What is your goal for a project? Track toy?Total budget? Skills?

If you want to get into Porsche racing the 944 is a good route, but be prepared to pay, personally I would look into a better example if that is the goal.

Just looking to spend a couple grand on a project? Then a straight e36 with high miles would be the ticket... swap something cool and have a blast

I had a 1990 944S2 for several years and it was a great car. Spares are expensive but it a solid and reliable car and easy to work on

Yer thinking 924. The 944 was a far better car, once Porsche got a hold of it.

I love the styling on them, one of the best looking Porsche imo. I'd love to drive the Turbo model

i dont think ive ever seen a 944 in running condition for under $2000, let alone $500.

Rust seems ok, just minor surface rust from the photos. underbody looks clean.

I don’t peruse Craigslist much so I can’t really comment on that. The cheapest on autotrader is more like $5k. If you’ve got garage space and if the car really runs like it says then why not...

The Bad, And The Ugly:

Unfortunately, 944s aren't very fast in a straight line. Car mags at the time reported 0-60 times of around 8.2 - 8.9 seconds. (And the mags weren't paying for the new clutch, which is amazingly difficult to get to.)

The engine is an interference design with a timing belt that requires replacement every 45,000 miles and tensioners that are persnickety to tension correctly, requiring a special tool. There is also a belt for the two balance shafts. Some also advocate replacing the water pump at the same time as the timing belt is changed, and upgrading to the turbo water pump. And since most Porsches aren't driven that much, some advocate the timing belt change at a 4 year, or even shorter time interval. If a belt breaks, the cost to fix the damage is probably more than the value of the car.

(There are no cheap Porsches!)

If you're not relying on it to take you everywhere every day, any car can be a fun project car.

Answer depends on your goal and how much you actually want a 944 versus just any fun project car.

If the answer is just any fun project car, then as Dabwright mentioned, it might be worth roughing out how much some of the more basic items are going to cost you. If you love the 944 and don’t mind shelling out whatever the project costs, then fuggit: do it.

While I realize this isn’t a 1:1 comparison, if I was unable to get discounted parts for my E90 and was stuck paying dealership list (or even close to list), I’d probably have reconsidered my purchase. To me that is a major consideration. Then again, if these things are actually appreciating as some say, and you’re able to make back what you put in, then +1 for doin it.

Well, back in the day, 8.2 to 60 was above average. Most cars back then had belt driven cams too, with interference valves.

944's I'm not too versed in but as a toy/project car it seems to fit the bills. If it is rust free and runs well then it is a good platform to start off with, especially if that's one you are looking for. Reasonable mileage and factory manual; Doesn't seem to be leaking oil everywhere either

LS swap good, T56 bad. Getting that transmission to fit is not going to be fun.
