Anyone coming from an older X5?

As the title says, if you converted to the G01 from your old X5, what made you want to do it?

My father for example drives his E53 (2006 Model) to this day. He loves the overall drive and experience. Trying to get him to convert, but no luck.

Count me in as one of those. I reluctantly gave up my 2006 X5 4.4i for the 2019 X3 M40i. The ONLY reason I did is because the X5 was starting to cost me a boatload of money in repairs. I cried when I sold it, just before heading to Spartanburg to pick up the X3.

I really miss the throaty growl of the V8, the huge openness of the opened pano roof, the simplicity of it all and the Dakota leather seats - leather was perfect after 13+ years; I hate the current Vernasca I have as it SO cheap to me (and it is very thin). And I miss the two-section tailgate/liftgate - it was so much nicer for many reasons.

(sigh)...now you have me teary-eyed again.

X5 vs X3

In December 2018 I converted from an 12.5 E70 3.0d to a G01 3.0d. The E70 was my 4th X5 and I had been very happy with all of them so I was a little nervous about downsizing. I had no need to worry. I love the more compact X3 and if anything, it’s a more comfortable ride than the X5 but, with an improved version of the basically the same engine, it fairly flies. There is certainly less room in the 2nd row and in the boot but I really don’t notice it up front and there’s only the two of us in any event. Love the X3 and by the way, while the X5 was gentle on the diesel, the new one is incredibly good and I have averaged 6.9l/100km for the first 3,000 km. The standard 3.0d here in Oz is also much more generously equipped than my old X5. It was also significantly cheaper than a new X5.

I had 2 E70 and a F15 40D,All excellent cars
I miss a few things from the X5
But did I make the right decision on the 40i

Hell yes ! this thing is fast and fun
And I'm smiling every time I drive it

The X5 is nice
But I'm glad I got the 40i

I came from a 2012 E70 30D which I had over 6 years, that was a great car, X3 was the first car I drove that I felt at least matched or was better and I test drove a lot over the last few years of ownership

Size wise perfect, no need for third row seats anymore for us, 2nd seat legroom excellent, I had the E70 for a few days whilst waiting for new owner to collect and X3 had slightly more back seat legroom although that is probably down to the E70 front comfort seats being a lot thicker, the middle seat on X3 is a lot more comfortable as X5 with third row has a narrow depth section and a hefty exposed mechanism for tilting

Tech wise very similar just updated so easy to get used to, I like the Vernasca leather a lot more, seems higher quality than Dakota on E70, ride comfort vastly improved and a lot quieter inside

Very happy with M40i, I sure wouldn't go back now

If you live close to your dad, just let him drive your new X3 M40i and it might be way easier than anything you can say to convince him

I actually test drove an official demonstrator, F15 X5 40d M Sport, back-to-back with the G01 but until I’d driven them I was preferring the X5.

This was because, for me, and even for a vehicle at the end of its life cycle, it was still a good looking thing, with presence. I like the overall size, the slightly bigger seats, the general interior finish, split tail, solid pano roof screen, split arm rest, ambient lighting, and the overall image of the car. At this stage, I knew little about the G01!

I then inspected the G01, ok... it looks ok, not a bad size, nice big 21” rims, modern tech, IMO well styled, good engine choices, and good option choices. A few small preferences... I would have preferred a solid pano roof screen like the X5 but guess this comes down to limitations due to overall vehicle size, but the rest of the car seemed good enough in overall quality and desirability, so that was that part of me satisfied.

I then drove the G01 30d M Sport, which was the moment I instantly liked it better than the X5 - I sort of didn’t want this to happen (because I still wanted an X5), but it did! The X3 was actually quieter, rode more smoothly, steered better, and felt more responsive. The result of this made me ‘up the ante’ and decided to go for the G01 M40d.

No regrets... other than not opting for one of the Merino leather choices, even so I’m still impressed by it every time I drive it.

I saw the new X5 in a showroom a few days ago - oh dear... I want one! Maybe next?

I got rid of my 2013 x5 for the 40i and haven’t looked back. I loved my x5 but after getting rear ended it wasn’t the same.

The performance of the 40i is awesome and I came from the x5 50i. Gas savings in negligible but I can’t seem to keep my foot off the gas in the 40i

We drive a 2014 X5 30D. We change cars every 5years and first time that i don't change brand. The X5 is an amazing car to drive, for me best car ever! However because it's my wife's daily driver and she wanted a smaler car we looked at the X2 and X3. X2 was a little bit to small for me. So decided to order an X3 20D Xline. It's 190 hp and i think that's enough for Belgium traffic. If not i will buy a chiptune box so it get's to 235hp.

I guess I qualify. I had a 2014 X5 35D and enjoyed the time I spent with it. Favorite point being that diesel 6. Enough power, great torque without being raped at the pump. It was pretty spartan inside, lacking a lot of the driver's assistance goodies we have now. Highway cruising was floaty like an 80's Caddy but comfortable enough.

Fast forward 5 years and now I am getting acquainted with my X4 M40I. My fond memories of the X5 are floating away. What a difference between the 2.

I have been a small coupe kind of guy for the most part aside from the X5(really for my wife) so for me to buy something bigger than a 3 series was really out of character but it had the features that I needed.

I am lowering it on H&R Springs this week and can't wait to see how it turns out.

The G05 X5 50i (V8 of course) is not longer simplistic but still great. I had an X3 M40i and while the Veransca isn't great that little B58 is more fun in some ways than the N63M. You can't throw the X5 around like a toy, enjoy the M40i, it's a great little SAV!

AndroidRobot,

Thank you for the kind words and encouragement to simply enjoy my chosen vehicle. It Is a blast to drive, and especially since I've done over a hundred driving schools, I DO appreciate its handling. I opted for this model since A) I couldn't afford the X5 50i (the engine I prefer) and B) X3 size is very close to my old X5, so it did not feel "too small". Plus, I have a Suburban so I didn't need the size of the X5. My only remaining wish was that they would offer better leather options on the X3 (like Merino or Nappa).

I've followed your story, so I'm aware you came from mine and now are seated in something I, too, would like.

We'll both enjoy now, yes?
