I have a 2018 M40i and my trunk release button on the driver's door when pushed down opens the trunk and when lifted up closes the trunk? Is this normal? Shouldn't it closes when the button is pushed down or opens upwards when the button is lifted up?

The rest of my windows goes down/opens when the buttons are pushed down or the windows goes up/closes when the buttons are lifted up, basically following the direction of the buttons being pushed as it should be...

It works the same way as window switches, to open you push down and to close you pull up, I think it would be confusing if switches operated differently

Except you are not likely to do much damage if you accidentally push a window switch as you get out of the car - compared with pushing the trunk release switch and having it open against a garage wall (this nearly happened to me recently - luckily I had left a good gap at the back of the car)
I think it is wired the wrong way, personally - due to the implications of accidentally pushing the switch

this confused me as well, it can be coded to your preference though ( I got used to it till I received the adapter )

Can't say I've ever encountered that problem, button seems too far forward on mine to accidentally push

If you have the BimmerCode app you can code the button to do what you what, even pull to open and pull to close

Instead of thinking up & down you have to think open & close

it helps to read the owners manual prior to posting these types of threads.

Related question - does the trunk button on the remote also close the trunk? I’ve tried pressing it several times when the trunk is open and it doesn’t close. I can just hear it clicking to open.

Just wondering if I’m doing something wrong...

In US and Canada you can't close the trunk with the fob button by default. It seems it can be coded though.
In Europe, if I recall it right, you close the trunk by holding the trunk button on the fob until the trunk is closed.

I'm with the OP. I did think it would open the other way. The other switches sort of have the window follow the way you move the switch.

Push down - Window Down
Pull Up - Window Up

Opposite for the boot/trunk, but meh I'm used to it now.

I guess they did that to prevent opening the trunk by accident if you try to open the window and mistakenly touch the trunk button.

Agree... it’s easier to accidentally push the boot switch down than pull it upwards.

I don't think so. The manual only says: here's the dumb and counter-intuitive way we've done if for you. It does not explain what went through the heads of the people who signed if off for production.
