Gesture Control Necessity?

Send our build in to BMWNA and they replied saying that we would not be able to have gesture control due to demand. We have the parking assistance package and I wanted to know if it hinders the 3D view. Can you adjust the was you see the car in 3D without gesture control? And does anyone actually use it? Thanks

Yes, you can use 3D without gesture control. You use the iDrive wheel to spin the camera. It works better than gesture control, IMHO.

FWIW, the only thing I use gesture control for these days is to quickly input my home address. And even with that, it can sometimes not recognize the gesture. It's a cool idea, just a bit ahead of its time. There was a somewhat hokey video posted here a couple of days ago about the future of gestures (e.g., point to a parking space and say park, point to a place of business and ask what it is, etc.). I can imagine some cool options there, but current gesture control is the equivalent of baby steps, which would be fine but the other input systems are far more advanced and make gesture control a little less helpful.

I love the updated gesture control. So much better than the first generation. We use ours all the time. Luxury is giving you more features you didn’t know you wanted.

Gesture control is something cool to show people. I find it faster to just use the steering wheel control for volume and changing station than using the gesture. Was free with credit so figured why not. But you'll never notice not having it.

I agree. I would not have ordered it and did not but it came with one of the packages. I also got a $190 credit for it so I am OK but to me it is just a gimmick. It's easier to use the steering wheel controls IMHO.

I've disabled mine day 1. It's not necessary and there are faster lest dumb-ass looking ways to accomplish the same thing.

So my dealer had my car in production however they had added an option I did not order. When the correct build was submitted the following day it no longer had the Gesture Control credit on it. He said that was because BMW was no longer offering it. Anyone have or not have Gesture Control credit on their build for late April?

Totally unnecessary feature. Doesn't work great, and all I ever use it for is to change the volume and answer phone calls.

I don't care what I do, but my success rate hovers at around 5% for changing the track on the stereo, and I must look like a moron to my passengers and even like I'm trying to hitchhike to other motorists when I try, so I've completely given that one up. I finally figured out how to mute with some consistency, though.

Sounds like your hand isn't in the right location. Possibly too far forward? If you hold it above he shifter it works every time

I actually played around with it this weekend. I'm getting better at the track change one. My thumb needs to be pointed a bit upward for it to work. It's a neat gimmick, but totally unnecessary.

I actually find it pretty useful - I don't need to take my eyes off the road to skip a track or adjust the volume. It is definitely a gimmick but I like it.

I really like it a lot. Most useful gestures to me and the 2 finger mute/unmute, volume gesture, and open fist/closed fist/open fist to navigate home. The point to answer a call or select something works well except if you go to scroll through a list with your finger it'll select the highlighted option before your finger gets to the screen. The dismissive hand gesture to decline a call works well too. I've been in the car with coworkers, other times with friends, and as we're talking a call comes in. A few times when I knew I needed to call the person back I swiped my hand to decline the call. It always amazes people. "Did you just wave your hand to the side and decline that call???" So, then I demo the rest of the gestures.

The two finger mute is great when pulling into a drive thru. As I pull up to the call box and put my window down, it's just second nature now to mute the radio with a gesture without even looking at anything.

I find the thumb right/left to move channels or tracks to be cumbersome. Scrolling is easier.

I found (actually my wife found) a technique that works every time for track changes. Stick your thumb out pointing right, directly above the shifter knob, hold it still for a brief moment, then gently "jerk" it right and hold it at the apex of the movement.

This seems to work way better than a wide, constant sweep of the thumb left or right across the camera's field of view.

YMMV.
