UK Tuning Options

Has anyone had their M40i tuned or thinking about having it done? A couple of places appear to be offering to do so, and I've emailed them to enquire especially as mine is a 2019 model.

AC Schnitzer have said they have one in the works for about 400HP, and should be ready soon.

https://www.celtictuning.co.uk/servi...e-1#t3-content

https://www.gadtuning.co.uk

Here's the graph from Celtic. EDIT: Just noticed the graph is for the M240i, even though the link was from the X3 M40i page.

Do any of you guys have experience of either?

Watching with interest.

I've been considering a piggyback but they all seem to have mixed reviews if you google.
DTUK, RaceChip, JB+, etc.
JB4 seems to be better, but it's also more "invasive" and I suspect also more easily detectable (just in case I need the warranty!).

And of course a proper remap is definitely the best option but there are choices there too!

Someone suggested Bootmod3 which looks like an excellent option, though it's still in beta right now. Should be available very soon though.

From what I know all piggybacks are detected if they really investigate the data and see boost peaks, fueling etc so rather then something being there’s it left data as a result of the piggyback calling for more boost etc

Where as a flash is obviously there and can be detected if looked for.

Guess it’s a case of if and how deep a dealer/BMW needs to check if a fault occurs, from what I gather the piggyback in theory would need them to look deeper but I don’t know how deep they look when investigating issues.

Also I’d be concerned on how the car looked, maybe wrong but if you had a stock looking M40i with a JB4 (over piggybacks are available ) and removed it for service/warranty work they are less likely to delve into the ECU then say I take me M40i which clearly has been modded on the outside so may suggest it’s also been modded on the inside!

Just my 2p worth!

Mine's (factory) debadged and on 20's... though I'm considering an exhaust modification to make it sound more like an earlier M40i but without removing the OPF.

Watching with interest. Perhaps we can do a group buy on tuning and / or exhaust mod? Mines a 2019 model, currently on 250 miles and happily keeping revs under 4.5k in adaptive / sport mode for now.

As posted on forum Mission does seem the best but once it’s installed that’s it! I personally would prefer a piggyback even if the increase was short of the reflash but I would need it to be smooth and not liking the jerky reports!

JB4 was my ideal choice but as said these jerky comments have put me off!

Watching with interest too!

I’m actually only interested in tuning off the cold start overrun. I’m happy with the stock performance and power delivery - at least for now!

That Bootmod3 looks very interesting. Especially if you can flash it back to stock. Reminds me of the Bluefin handset I had for the 123d.

I thought people have had that coded out - perhaps Almaretto could do that?

Oh, really? I’d not read that. I have BimmerCode and have not seen that option - perhaps something I could do in expert mode?

I notice when ASS is enabled, that the restart is very quiet - that’s what I want on every start up! But I know that ASS only kicks in when car is warmed up.

I do quite like the exhaust note on cold start, but not early morning which probably annoys my neighbours!

You remap the car yourself through the OBD port, and there's a selection of different maps for quality of fuel used and for any physical mods like intake, exhaust etc.

Read the wiki here:

Same as Mission then but just keen to know why BootMod3 have a good following, guessing it’s just down to good tried and tested product?

Still uneasy able mucking with the ECU

Yeah they look similar, mission already have B58 tune though!

Best to go with piggy back then, so easy to install and remove, and reprogram or sell when you change cars.

I went on their FB page for a while and noticed a lot of this isn’t working and my car is acting up comments. Everyone really likes them for the different maps (I guess?) and I notice in the wiki they have different fuel maps... not sure why when my car with only one tune can adjust to race fuel or E25 without switching any maps

Can someone elaborate why bootmod is so great?

Ive had my ford transit 2015 van done buy celtic, went from 125 to 200 bhp and boy does it feel good.

I was toying with the idea of getting my 40d done buy them but i think its got enough power for now.

I had my Civic Diesel done by Celtic back in 2007. No problems over the 4 years I had it.

I had responses back from both companies.

£450 from GAD and £495 from Celtic, though that did include travel to you rather than to them. Both includes VAT.

Both said for 2019 models only stage 1 can be done due to the PPF/OPF and no aftermarket exhausts yet available.

Tempting but need to put a few miles on.

Cool, sounds good and yes tempting indeed! I think I'll only know once I've given the car the beans post 1.2k miles to see whether I need more power
