Found a "steering column" squeak - After 2 months of looking
There was a squeak that was driving me crazy. I was sure it was coming from the steering column. Sounded like styrofoam rubbing on metal with even the smallest move of the car when really cold. It was the kind of noise you sell your car to get rid of.
Took apart the surround behind the steering wheel, nothing. Took off the knee area cover and found nothing lose. Went to the dealer. They were actually great, they spent a lot of time trying to find the issue. They even drove with me to an underground parking lot to see if the sound was coming from the dash or the suspension. It turned out to be coming from the VRSF charge pipe fitting at the top. You can actually just shake the charge pipe and it makes a horrible squeaking noise, but since it is aftermarket the dealer will not touch it (but for $1000 they will replace it with a factory charge pipe ) It likely means that no grease was put on the gasket. Didn't take it off, just sprayed WD-40 around the top fitting. It did not totally stop it, but reduced it substantially. The fit is so tight I would have to drop the intercooler, which in the end I will have to do. Just a tip in case others are suffering from the same insufferable noise. |

I had a similar experience recently myself. I installed a Treadstone charge pipe, and right away, I had a little bit of vibration on start up, but only intermittently. Immediately above where the CP couples to the IC (Or is it below?) there is an aluminum line of some kind going to the radiator. I think it might be a transmission cooler line. Anyway, the clearance between the two is so slim that they were intermittently touching, causing a vibration at idle. I had to manufacture a vibration dampener to cancel out the noise. Basically, I took a piece of cardboard and wedged it between the two; problem solved. Eventually, I might get a piece of silicone rubber to stick in there.
