Will the new M3 with AWD - Move you from the M5?

Now that it has been confirmed that there will be an AWD version of the M3 and that they may/will have the same RWD button option as the M5...Will you look into down sizing?

At 474 HP for the standard car - 454 for a "pure" model that has manual only - and a host of potential 500+ HP CS, CSL and other versions - I am going to have to guess the balance of power to the ground (I am going to guess a mid 11 second 1/4 at low 120 MPH) and the reduced weight and size of the 3 series platform (and apparently 130 lbs lighter than the existing M3/M4) - plus the reduced price versus the M5 - could make it the ultimate goldilocks car for BMW.

I am certainly keeping my eye on it.

I bought my M6 because of the V8TT + DCT + RWD + 4 seats combo. There is nothing else out there. The only other car I considered was an F82 6MT. The hope of a RWD 6MT G82 might have me go to the G82 but no way will I consider a ZF8.

BMW would have to upgrade the interior finish immensely to get my attention. I looked at them in detail at the dealership. Not close in finish to the X5M or M5. If BMW cloned the M5 finish and installed the s63tu , I would cancel my TTS. (Which is on the SIEM Cicero now).

Sure Ill consider - I like all different chassis sizes and love driving. While the M5 and M6 cars that I have had are faster, the E46, E92, F82 M3/M4 cars I also had were great cars the delivered great acceleration especially when modded, and while being less luxurious created an arguably more involved driver to chassis experience for me. I have had many times the smaller M and bigger car at the same time. I would miss both when I got out of the other. M5/M6 were/are great GT cars but my M3/M4's were just fun- something that is not always quantifiable or explained easily on a forum but they just were smaller aggressive rides that made me happy in sharp turns and quick bursts on open roads.

I am not a hp freak per se but have higher OEM hp cars. Porsche is a great example of how an excellent "lesser" hp car can deliver amazing performance and ultimately an excellent driver rewarding experience. Maybe this new M3/M4 chassis and AWD will create something similar? Who knows until we get behind the wheel but I hoping it will.

I am similar in the fact that with the AWD and about 500 HP - I think the car will be reasonably quick and a little more fun to drive/simply smaller lol. With the cost reduction too - it may be a viable option.

That said - Onfire is correct - the interior in the 3 series seems overly bland and poopy. So that may be a game changer in the other direction for me. I continue to watch...

A smaller car with a good hp/weight ratio will be nice- the AWD will add to the launch fun and Im sure a tune will be readily available quite quickly. I dont let interiors make or break my decision but they do play a role. All I really care about is functionality- my NSX is one of the best and worst when it comes to interiors; great seats and driver vision but cheesy interior components and poor multi media tech. Im ok with this.

My plan is to move down to the new M3 once my lease is up. Love the M5 but I do miss the sport feel of the M3

I would be shocked if it weren't at least as powerful / fast as this:

Might be worth a test-drive!

The dealers (aka stealerships) have begun questioning potential buyers here. Said first units are coming November/December.

There will be apparently 3 versions of the M3.
A RWD, a AWD normal and a Competition with the M5's switchable AWD. They said it will have the same powertrain as the X3M (with the ZF8 as well).

It will be a mini M5. I think BMW moved in the wrong direction with the M3, as it should be much more driver oriented than the M5 (given that the M5 is a car for wealthy business people, who want excitement in their commute or weekend, the M3 is for hard core keen drivers).

Yes - my article above goes into detail about all of the trims...I think they are trying to do it all with all of the choice - it will be interesting to see if the strategy pays off...

I will probably end up buying one for my wife.
With the clients I roll with, a 3 series is not an option.
Having said that, I will for sure have driving it .

It's not going to have massaging seats and soft close doors / upgraded sound system. A no for me.

Glut of lightly used M5s incoming? That will be a tough choice.
