Random Trunk Opening - happened to you?

I have been reading the random trunk opening threads and needless to say I am concerned about it happening to my M40i when it gets here. It is hard to tell from the threads just how common the problem is so I figured a poll might help get some perspective.

Edit: It might be a little late to add this for some, but if you respond "Yes" it would be great if you could add a comment below with your car's build month/year, or purchase month/year if you don't know the build. Please also make it clear in the comment that you DID experience a random trunk opening. Otherwise we will just have a bunch of build dates :-)

I also got my key fob coded (a month later), so that the trunk button ONLY works after the car has been unlocked. Then also coded "long press" to be sure. If it helps any - I always back into my parking spots....but, make sure that the "last green marker" is where the corner joins the floor and wall. I read about so many "random openings" that it scared me. lol. This way, even if it does open while i'm parked, there is no damage to the car.

I did the same. The dealer did it for free, with no hassle.

Pre facelift 2018 car does not have keyless entry. Pretty certain it was accidental push on keyfob button (the range the fob operates seems far to long). Since getting m sport key fob cover never happened again

I clicked the yes, but once I put a rubber protective cover around the fob a year ago it has never happened since.

Garage List
I happens for me, I have trailer hitch, so no foot opening rear. I figure I'm too fat and key is somehow pressing in my pocket.

Yes, and it continued to happen even with a silicone fob cover. Coding to open only when unlocked fixed it.

This has never been a problem for me. I coded the fob to have a long press on the trunk button, but I had not had any problem since day one. I did the coding due to all the complains here. No fob cover.

I think it comes down to how you handle your key fob. Are you jamming it into your skinny jeans pocket, or bottomless purse? If you dont want buttons pressed on accident don't put the fob somewhere that would be possible. I guess this is harder for some of us than others

Never happen to me. As a precaution though, I use the kind of key fob protectors that you are not supposed to press any button through it.

Also it would be great if everyone who voted yes can chime in and say if key fob protectors help resolved the problem.

A key fob protector did not help me.

See https://youtu.be/sbHDwudL8so

My dealership just told me they are going to replace my kick sensor and code the option that requires the vehicle to be unlocked before the trunk will open.

Interesting numbers so far. It's more common than I would liked to have seen I guess. Might have to pursue some possible fixes right away when I take delivery. Not sure I want to risk it happening.

So far I think there has only been one car that had it open while in motion?

Happened 1 time for me at a red light with the key fob in my jeans pocket. Bought a fob protector and hasn't happened since (5 months and counting). Don't have comfort access.

Happened to me, very similar to thestuarts. Fob was entirely out of my hands, 15' away on a shelf in the garage - hadn't been touched. As I was drying the right rear fender at juncture to right rear passenger door after a hand wash, the liftgate started opening and closing, on its own, multiple times (8 or more, I lost count due to the shock and awe) - sometimes fully open, sometimes partially, up and down in a freak fashion, lights flashing and beeping galore. I couldn't believe it. Finally, it stopped.

The car was unlocked, fob far away and untouched, and I was nowhere near the kick sensor.

This has happened twice. August 2018 build, delivery 09/06/18 at the Performance Center.

My precious Gordon setter NEVER rides in this vehicle as I cannot trust it; instead, I choose my Z71 Suburban, whose liftgate has never malfunctioned ever in 12 years.

Has anyone had it open in a car wash?

I have seen some comments about it opening while hosing it down after a manual wash. Opening in an automated wash could be disastrous.
