It's coming.....

So I ordered my X3 M40i on New Years Eve and was told it would be late March, maybe even mid April before it arrived.

My dealer has been giving me weekly updates (on top of the automated BMW ones) and yesterday I got the lovely news that my car will arrive with them on Friday, so I'm picking it up a week Saturday. This gives me a week to bed it in before a 2,000 miles road trip to the French alps for a week of skiing.

I thought I was going to have to take my old 430d, but so pleased the X3 will be here in time for the trip.

And I'm really pleased BMW were able to deliver to the UK within 8 weeks rather than the 3.5 months initially quoted (they put it down to ordering BMW Individual dash inserts).

Roll on a summer of road trips all across Europe!

Spec -

Phytonic Blue
Technology Pack
Comfort Pack
MSport + Pack

Congrats - good news for you and lovely spec.

Was going to share my excitement that you can change the Adaptive LEDs for Left hand and Right hand traffic through the iDrive - but not sure whether the ICONs that you get with the M40i do that all for you?

Anyway - enjoy the trip(s) and the car.

Great news!

A trip round the Alps will be great! Are you needing winter tyres for going?

Congrats! Just picked mine up this past weekend and it is better than I would have imagined. Taking it on a 1500 mile trip next week.

Whoop whoop! Congrats!

Isn’t your spec basically everything except the tow bar?!!

With the current warm spell, are you still going to put winters on for your trip? Or chains when you get to the alps? I’d be interested in what chains - I’d be worried about damage to the 21s or even finding chains that fit!!

Adaptive Icons have the same setting, much more useful than on the old Xenons I had in previous car

That’ll be a great trip in a great car, something to be really looking forward to. When you get there, you won’t know whether to go skiing or driving!

Wow, that's pretty much fully loaded.
Will you be getting winter tyres for your Alps trip?
And what colour interior have you gone for?

According to the manual I downloaded you can but it is a manual process through the iDrive system. Which is still better than on my 430d where you had to go into the dealer each time to change the lamps so you could use the auto main beams. I just didn't bother in the end as being at a dealer every other week (sometimes every week) wasn't my idea of fun

Not this time. I've bought some snow socks for sticky situations, but the summer tyres should be fine on most of the journey. But I will get winter wheels next year.

I have winter wheels on my 430d and definitely recommend everyone getting them.

Pretty much everything but the red leather, rear blinds (I'm sure the dog would eat them) and tow bar.
When I originally built the car I didn't have the driving safety pack checked and chose red leather instead. However, after a small accident in a hire car just before my order went in, I decided to swap out the red leather for the safety pack

No winter tyres this trip. Buying snow socks instead (sorta like chains, but actually fit 21" wheels - the chains don't). But I will get winter tyres/wheels for next winter.

I'm not a very good at skiing, so I'm sure there will be a few rest days where I go cruising the Alps

Not for this trip, but I will have them in time for next winter. I have them on my 430d and defo would want them on the X3

I've gone for the black with white stitching. I wanted the red leather (have it in my 430d) but had to sacrifice something for the safety package. Plus, the red leather I have now is also semi-blue thanks to my jeans, and cleaning it regularly is a hassle.

Let us know how it goes with the snow socks - which ones have you got? And have you used before? I’m interested in getting some ahead of next winter.

From my reading, it sounds like snow socks are only good when actually on snow and will wear through quite quickly if used on any bare tarmac. Will you have to remove when driving on the ploughed/clear roads?

I'm going with AutoSocks as they seem the best out there. They seem pretty easy to put on/take off, watching the video. And yeah, they're really only to replace chains and to be used on snow. Not perfect, but trying to get winter tyres now is painful and very expensive. And with spring around the corner I don't see the point right now.

Urgh! That is a pain in the arse!

Did they say why? Have you gone for lots of BMW Individual items on the car? And where is it coming from? US or SA?

You can save a shortcut to the idrive menu where you change them, on one of your 7 buttons if you're using it fairly often.

Travelling many years ago I remember we never bothered putting the deflectors on or the yellow paint you needed on headlamps for France and just tried to avoid driving at night. Bit easier with a couple of button presses.

Yup, it'll be added to my list of shortcuts. I just hope the auto time adjust now works on this BMW as it never has on my 430d and had to shortcut that to manually adjust the time every time I crossed the channel

Oh, thought that was just me on my M135i.

Haven't tested it yet.
