Harman Kardon Speakers - you like them?

As the title says, I'm curious to hear how you all feel in regards to these speakers.

Personally, I thought they were great in the M40i. Do you have any complaints/comments in regards to these speakers?

Let me know!

Zero complaints. But be patience and delay your judgement until you give them a chance to 'break in'. Frequent adjustment to the Tone and equalizer would help during the break in period.

I personally think they suck anywhere over 50% volume. At least that's the case using Bluetooth Audio, which is all I listen to so it was an appropriate comparison as I also listen to Bluetooth audio in comparable systems. I was quite disappointed of how the bass distorted or over-extended the drivers at volumes over 50%.

Overall NOT terrible and definitely much better than the stock system, but disappointing compared to some competitors.

Love mine. No complaints. I did swap the HK's out for Focals on my 235i (sold), but liking this set up as-is.

No complaints from me, even without messing with the various settings for the system. However I'm far from an audiophile.

I’m not a huge audiophile but decided to get them when I ordered my car. I typically always have music going but have it as background music so not really blasting them. At first I was sort of like meh and thought I wouldn’t order them again but them I let them break-in for a few months and they sound pretty good even at low levels. The biggest difference was going in and adjusting the eq via some suggestions in another post. That made it sound really great and I was shocked at the difference.

I think they are "ok" so far but I got only 250 miles on my car yet. My wife's Bose in her CX-5 seems to have more base. Have not touched the equalizers yet. Think there is a thread about EQ settings here. Anyone know how long it takes to break them in?

Depends on how much you play, how loud you play your music, and what kind of music you play... there is no set rule of thumb... But the more you play them, setting it to high volume level without making you uncomfortable, would help speed this up. Basically, we are trying to let the speaker move enough to loosen it up from the constrain of friction which is present when all the parts are new...

Once the speakers start to get broken in, you will know by the richness and quality of music.

Thanks! I'm no audiophile so I'll play around a little

LOL - I'm not an audiophile by any means (it's better that way since you can go broke quick pursuing sonic perfection

However, my old ears can still notice my HK system sounding better and better over time since last October, and I have a feeling that there is still plenty of room to improve!

Someone on the 2addicts forum once told me around ~ 40hrs to break in. I have no idea if that's an accurate statement. Also not an audiophile by any stretch!

I really like the HK system. I’ve had loaners with bade sound package and the difference is day & night.

Since a couple folks mentioned it in this thread, here's the older thread about EQ setting. There are some interesting nuggets too. Happy reading.

I think they are crap. If I was to do it over I'd leave them off and upgrade the base system.

I like them - I'd do a SUB upgrade if you can because the interior of the X3 is bigger than a normal 3 series (that I'm used to). It sounds nicer but the bass is definitely lacking.

Here are my settings in case you're interested:

I'm not impressed so far with the system in my M40i. But the vehicle is new, so I will let it break in. If this was just the base audio, I would say it's ok, but not impressed for paying extra. In all honesty, the base system in my Audi sounds better to me. That said, who cares, the best sound system in the car is the exhaust.

If you think about it though.......$800 for 16 speakers and an amp is a pretty killer deal

I read a lot of posts about it and seems like it doesn't compared to a upgraded system with 3rd party amps/speakers.

Can't compare since I have a stock system so you guys already sound way better than mine.

I prefer hk, bose, burmester, etc. I can't tell the difference although I'm sure people who hear the standard sound systems could tell a difference. I love mine, I think it suits the x3 perfectly.

Bluetooth....so your source audio material is streamed, is that correct?

Can't expect very good quality audio from compressed music files regardless of system components. It's sort of 'garbage in, garbage out' - put a CD in and take a listen, you'll immediately notice an increase in quality regardless of the type of music.

I'm in the market for my first BMW and I confess, I have only been looking at models that have this system. It makes it a little difficult since this is something that's typically been buried in the details of the car when you look online.

Having said that, I'm not really sure of the difference between the stock system and the HK. I know there's an Amp but how many more speakers are there?
