E90 Trans neutralising at traffic lights cold?
I have a Australian delivered 2010 BMW 320d Lifestyle (E90) with 72,000km. I have a strange problem with the transmission neutralising while waiting at traffic lights when cold. When I sit for a while and release the brake pedal there is no drive for a second then it thumps into gear. It only last for the first few minutes then stops.
I spoke to a transmission specialist who I know, and he says that is how the double clutch transmission works but I spoke to my BMW dealer and they didn’t understand what I was talking about, or the service advisor didn’t (who wasn’t a mechanic). I have since been told there is a timer setting which can be adjusted to control this problem. Does anyone have knowledge of this issue? |

I don't think 320d have a Double Clutch Trans. Pretty sure only 335i and M3 had it in Aussie. I could be wrong though. You can check if its got it by typing your VIN number into this link. https://www.mdecoder.com

I just checked. They definitely don't come with a DCT transmission. It could be something simple like the trans being low on oil, or it could be something more serious like the solenoids in the mechatronics, or it could also be the mechatronics rubber sleeves/seals.

It isn't supposed to be that bad, but yes, the normal auto tranny is supposed to do this. It's "feature" called NIC (neutral idle control) and it can be coded out. Search the forums for it. |

You could try that but i honestly think if its as bad as you describe you have got other issues going on. You shouldn't really be able to feel the NIC operation.Does the transmission shift nicely otherwise? Have a read of this regarding mechatronics seals
