Heads up display
How do you clean the dash area where the HUD is?
Also does anyone get a thin line of glare on the windshield right below the HUD? Edit It happened again and took a picture. Its the glare line under the speed. Definitely dont have a chip there and the line moved as i was turning at that corner then went away as the sun was not above. It has been raining alot in the Bay Area and finally when the sun comes out a couple times i see this. Its very annoying and it gets bright. Does this happen with all HUDs or just this car? Im curious if i turn the HUD off if i will still see that line. Edit 2 Just came back from the dealer for something else and spoke to the shop foreman about this. He knew exactly what i was talking about. He had 1 other person come in with this issue and they fixed it by tinting that line in the HUD box so there is no reflection. They dont take it apart completely just a couple of screws to get to the box. Im going to have it done when i go in for service in a couple of months. Not sure what you mean by 'line of glare', but I did notice the rectangular outline of HUD (the reflection of the background screen) if I had the intensity adjusted higher than mid point.

Do you mean at night time? Probably because you’ve got the dash brightness wheel up too high.

No only when the sun is directly above it seems like. I only noticed it last week and didnt see it again until today. Its like a thin streak of glare on the windshield right under the HUD box. If i put my hand over the dash to cover the display it goes away. It seems to be a reflection thats why i thought to clean the area. I will try to take a picture of it if it happens again.
Otherwise how do you guys clean that area? |

First time I saw it was on the pickup drive home. I thought there was a chip in the windshield. It is part of the HUD projection that shows up with various sun conditions.

Mine has the same thing. I think it's because the bezel around the HUD glass doesn't cover that edge of it.
We've had three other BMWs with HUDs and none of them had that problem with the glare. It's kind of annoying, but as others have said, it only manifests when the sun is at a certain elevation. As the days get longer I might get more annoyed about it and try slapping some electrical tape onto it and see if that fixes it without blocking any of the HUD image. |

Sometime I saw something that looked like a crack or scratch. Found that it is from the HUD. Today I cleaned the HUD surface with a lightly damp fiber towel and didn't see the phenomenon again under the same conditions. Also the windshield was cleared, that might helped too.

I might have seen a very faint line once in a blue moon reflected off the windshield, and I take that as the sunlight reflection off the edge of the housing of the HUD inside the dash. Never anything prominent like the double line shown in OP's updated picture. :
Edit - I am not so sure those 2 lines reflection was a result of the HUD being dirty from random dirt or grease. I'm wondering if we can see what's on the unit by holding a small mirror near it. |

I was looking into it a couple of times a concluded that it is definitely coming from the HUD. There is one side that is shiny, silver-ish, a the when the sun lights hits it, it makes a reflections on the windshield. I may pay a visit to the dealer too for this, if is that easy to fix. Maybe it would be sooner than yours.

I didn't notice the HUD glare lines (always around mid-day, and similar to and beyond the updated OP pic) until this forum helped me notice the HUD glare lines....

for those who have seen the reflection lines at certain times of the day - have you tried lowering the display and see if that makes a difference!
i have my HUD set to the lowest position and i've never seen glaring lines like that in mine, ever, regardless of time of the day... |

Does no one clean the inside of their windshields? All of the cars I've had -- including the X3 -- get a slow buildup of some hazy film on the inside. Cleaning the inside every month or three helps with glare and, I assume, HUD issues.
I just cover the HUD opening with 2-3 microfiber cloths (the ones I have are thin) to prevent whatever windshield spray cleaner I'm using from getting to the HUD projector. I then use a swiffer to clean any dust off that (and the rest of the dashboard/console). |

I do clean my windows outside and inside. The glare is still there a it definitely comes from the HUD assembly.
