Summer tires vs all season
I ordered an X5 with the 21 inch rims style 744 orbit grey. It comes with summer run flats which are Pirelli P Zero (front 275/40, rear 315/35). But with the cold Chicago weather we have here they won't be any good. I found Pirelli scorpion verde all season that are the same size but they're not run flat and that's OK with me. Guy at the tire shop said they should work fine but was wondering if anybody had any thoughts.

If you don't want to do the dedicated summer/winter thing you must go with all seasons. Running summers in a Chicago winter will be dangerous for you and motorists around you as the compound will be rock hard and provide limited traction on a good day.

Please don't buy the Scorpion Zeros, they aren't UHP tires just regular touring one's. If you don't care about handling then go for it, otherwise stick with UHP All seasons if and when they launch or just summer tires.

First - I think you did the right thing by ordering the car with 21" performance tires. That is the option that increases the speed limiter to Germany restricted 155 MPH (option 840)instead of artificially cutting it to 130 MPH that you get with all season tires.
Plus - you get much better handling and braking/cornering which maximizes your car potential. All season tires are well known for not excelling in any categories - they are so so in the dry and so so or bad in the winter. So - you are ahead of the game. You have V rated performance summer tires. All you need now is Performance winter tires - and you'll be all set. You can get V rated winter tires as well. In US it is not important to have aggressive snow tires that people use in Finland or Russia for driving on packed snow. They plow in minutes here and we drive on cold wet pavement most of time. So pick max performance winter tire like Michelin Pilot Alpin 5 for SUV and you'd be able to drive 155 in the winter on the cold roads and still be great in snow (unless you go major off roaring). As for Run flats - they are much better than they used to be but still have limited availability, sacrifice performance and comfort, cost a lot and can not be permanently repaired. But they provide that piece of mind that you won't have an immediate blow out on the highway and your wife can drive home with a flat tire and not get stuck on the highway. I usually take run flat all seasons off after some miles and store them to return the car with. I use regular tires - performance for winter and max performance summer. I carry a jack and electric pump at all times with patch/ plug kit and can repair small issues on the side of the road. Or call AAA. One more thought - if you buy 20" 275/45/20 package with rims from tire rack - you do not have to dismount the tires every season - major pain on RFT tires. and you'd be able to rotate 4 wheels. |

I looked for 2 weeks and working with my large local tire shop. There is literally only ONE AS for the 21” wheels. It’s the Scorpion Verde AS. There is nothing else. This is why most all of us went with the M-Sport 20 wheels that live in cold climates. Consider yourself ahead as there is nothing for the 22” size wheels. Your choice is to buy a second set of 20” wheels/tires set up or the Verde AS. The Verde are $2k for just the 21” tires.
My issue with switching to winter wheels is I drive from Pa to South Beach Miami in the winter and the last thing I want to do is drive in Miami with winter wheels. Worse yet drive in the winter with summer tires and get caught in a snow storm coming back north. Last edited by MystroX5; 01-16-2019 at 07:44 PM.. |

21” set is 1500 and say 100 everytime you have to swap the tires is 600, so cheaper to get 20’s with rims.

What tire is everyone going with on the 20" winter setup? I'm looking on tirerack. Is it worth the extra few bucks to get the Bridgestone over the Michelin? Not reading good things about the Michelin.

Look at the Michelin Pilot Alpin instead of the X-Ice

I got the bridgestones and they are great so far, not much snow though so far this year where I live...as for rims, I went with the MSW48 ones, I got the TPMS, and had them mounted, balanced and shipped from tirerack and installed myself...pretty easy to do

That does seem like a pretty convenient route. How do the wheels hold up against rough roads and pot holes? Also, do the BMW center caps fit in those wheels?

I prefer non-RFT's hence why I got the spare tire option. What I don't like are the two awful 21" tire options. Scorpion Verde's don't have great grip for AS tires, and the P Zero summers wear too and aren't great for the high price. I'm waiting to see what else comes out before getting a set of 20" wheels

If I get the X5, I will order the 20", and the spare tire option.
The best-performing tires (Tirerack site) are never run flats, so if I keep the X5 long enough to require tires, I'll switch to the new Michelin Pilot Sport A/S 3+. Bought these tires last Fall, and they are best all-seasons I've ever driven. And they are now available in the X5 275/45r20 size. Wish I could have these on a new X5.
